What climbing goals do you have your eye on for 2025, and how do you intend to train for them?

With Minigote due next month, my goals may be a wee bit aspirational, but I'll try for them nonetheless.

- Fall in love with outdoor bouldering
- Bolt and send project 1 (long pumpfest)
- Bolt and send project 2 (short 8' roof)
- Send open project (cryptic dimply vert)

- Send Tooky Shuffle before resetting to mMB2025

- Set three 2025 problems that get benchmarked

- Build outdoor adjustable MB2017.

In pursuit of these goals, I'm going to try to maintain a weekly regimen of 2x 90min board, 2x 30min cardio, and 1x weights. This is downgraded from my current protocol to account for Minigote. We'll see if that's a sustainable training load with a newborn ;-)

Fritz, I think there’s some sort of biological adaptation that occurs when your child is born. Some of my best mini sessions were in the first month of my child’s life when I was consistently running on a 2-4 hours of broken sleep. Congrats again and God bless your family.

1)many gunks 13s

2)second baby due in June

That is all, set myself up this season to get a lot done in the spring. Winter training started last week.

at my age keep climbing and have fun. Theres  a pretty big Ice route that I want to solo if it comes in fat enough. I only noticed it last march and  bailed from the mid point because it was too warm..  we had a really dry fall so its possible it wont even come in this year. love to take a big climbing trip with Isa next summer if our health and sceduals allow.

Do some climbing, have fun, not worry about achievements.

Perfect morning for reflection Fritz, having a long breakfast at shelf road!
Last year I stepped away from concrete goals and chose more of a theme of saying ‘yes’ to travel. I called my company’s bluff on their ‘unlimited PTO’ policy and had a lot of memorable trips. Also when I was at home, I had my best year ever just following intrinsic motivation.

This next year I’d like to boulder much less, and spend the summer doing more social sport climbing and long days out in the alpine. More memories, less self isolation on a pad or with the drill. I’d be really bummed to not finish off (or see a homie send) some wicked trad projects and one hard sport line at a new crag. (CO Springs devs HMU!)

I’ll try to climb a bit more locally, mostly in BoCan and Eldo since they’re so close.

Find some more fourth class scrambles in the Indian Peaks, and perhaps finally hike Longs Peak.

The big prize will be a late March attempt to hike Grand Gulch in Bears Ears from the Government Trailhead south to the San Juan River, then east to Slickhorn Canyon and out for a 50+/- mile circuit. I’ve previously hiked the northern half of Grand Gulch from Bullet Canyon to Kane Gulch, and Slickhorn Canyon after approaching from the opposite direction. Sparse info available on this new route, and the rangers say that it is now impossible due to a large rockslide around a 50’ pour off just before the river. If I can’t find a way around that, then it will involve 30+ miles of backtracking to get back to my truck.  If anyone has any beta about this route, I’d love to hear it.

If I can get around this obstacle, then I’ll need to follow the strata along the river to connect with Slickhorn Canyon.  I previously exited that via the fourth branch, and will have my truck parked atop the first branch this time.

The section along the river will follow the strata horizontally from out of frame to the left, exiting to the right, underneath the prominent cliff band.

As a long time resident and product of New England, I really enjoy the uniqueness of canyon travel now.

I have two primary goals for 2025:

Become a 5.9 leader at every style, by which I mean the following: finger cracks (tight fingers and ring locks), hands (thin, normal, wide), fists (including rattly), OW, and chimneys (squeeze and wide), face, and slab *shudders*. I'm going to train these by seeking out routes that are in the 5.8-5.10a range and TRing the shit out of them, and then going out and trying to onsight a lot of routes in the 5.8-5.10a range for each of those styles.

Lead my first 10c route. I don't want to lead a baby 10c either, there's a 10c overhaning sport route at my crag that is the perfect project for me as it features all my physical weaknesses. It's steep, is sustained 10c from the first bolt to the last, and is basically 50' of lockoffs, which I'm terrible at. I reckon if I can get to the point where I can lead that thing other 10c routes should go rather quickly for me.

I'm gonna train for that one by projecting a 10b first and TRing some mid 10s in my area over winter. Hope to send my first 10c next fall when I'm leaner and stronger (currently fat and weak from lack of climbing this year from poor health).

And then of course if I pull all this off I'll have to celebrate by leading rad multipitches that I am currently incapable of climbing. Absolutely Free, Travelers Buttress, Central Pillar of Frenzy, The Line, and many others will hopefully get sent next year. We'll see!

I turn 40 in 2025, so my goals include finally making a trip to the under-the-radar but reportedly fantastic Fyffe Rover Gorge here in NZ, doing 40 new routes at one of my local crags in one day for my 40th, and doing my first Ewbank grade 31 (5.13d). We’ll also be living in Oregon for 4 months and the Blue Mountains (Australia) for 2 months later in the year, so I want to do some classics at Smith, hopefully make a trip to Squamish (still never been), and work through some projects at the local choss crags in the Willamette Valley. There are lifetimes worth of routes in the Bluies I want to do, so continuing to chip away at my ticklist there is also a goal.

Our 3 year old got her first pair of climbing shoes for her birthday last week, so continuing to get out as a family is also a major priority. We had our second kid a few months ago, so my goals for 2025 are pretty modest in general, just get out there and enjoy the rock, the community, and see a couple of new places!

Same as always.

Put pants on, show up.

Beyond that?

Enjoy day to day, enjoy the various people in my life (climbing and otherwise), get to events (climbing and otherwise), make more friends (climbing and otherwise), get to City of Rocks and the local bouldering. Get to a gym, any gym, regularly.

Perhaps meet minigote?

:-)

That's why we have a queen-sized mattress as the crash pad in the Crimp Crib! :-) <8

Edit to add, do be prepared to have not much sleep, and much changed priorities, coming up. You are quite clueless, we all are, and you too will find it a charming trait of other soon to be new parents, soon enough.

I have a couple goals for 2025, hopefully I'll be as successful as last year!

- climb at least 1 grade V wall, and bivy. I was hoping to do one last fall but all of my plans fell through. I'll try and train for aid by doing as much aid as possible in Ogden, and hopefully putting up a couple new aid lines around here (I have a couple in mind).

- lead 11b/c sport. I think by climbing as much as possible in the summer I can get there. Specifically I think Teardrops on the City would be sick!

- lead Tree Crack up at the schoolroom. Id love to get better at finger cracks and this is a perfect opportunity.

- Put up loads of multipitch and some single pitch around Ogden and maybe Weber Canyon. I just need to stop being lazy and wrangle some partners for this one

Happy holidays folks!

- Matt

  • Send 3 new V8s before it's time to get the ropes back out
  • Become proficient on TRS, TRS Bonecrusher at North Table
  • Send The Price for Fire before it gets too hot
  • Climb the Naked Edge in reasonable style (maybe a lofty goal but possible if I spend enough time in Eldo this year)
  • Do an alpine climb in RMNP
  • Hangboard for the first time ever - maybe a base endurance type thing

My wife and I are having our first kid in May, so… if I get out on rock at all, that’s enough for me!

I need to push grade more, need to try more 12s I missed my goal of climbing ten 5.12s this year, and maybe push into the 13s would be cool to start projecting the glass menag, try to minimize the soloing, maximize pitches climbed per day, fingers crossed I can climb more than 2024 but it has been a fantastic year, most recorded pitches in a year for me, my heart has been itching to get back to the linville west side to continue development but it is still technically closed :( :( :( considering sneaking in in the near future I'm tired of being trapped in suburbia, I wonder how fucked all the obscure trails are, I need to get a van probably but not sure I really have the resources to do so and make it worth while.

My main goal is to finally break into 5.12 sport, I've been chilling at 5.10 and 5.11 for way too long!

To get there I want to work my two 5.12 projects more often, pull hard more often on sport, and actually use my hangboard regularly to get more time in less than bodyweight hangs! More sport cragging days and when I can't find a partner instead of lead rope soloing easy trad I want to go top rope solo hard sport.

Hoping to start strong by getting lots of days out there in January while traveling

Cheers to a great year around the corner!
