Big injury? What kept the crazy away?

This question is for anyone who has suffered a big injury while climbing that had a long recovery time.

What helped most to keep the crazy away while you waited to recover from surgery? What did people do that helped the most. How did you pass the time? How did you keep mentally strong?

Finger injury, so lots of long steep hikes.

I’m sorry if this advice to yourself.  I hope you recover soon and that you don’t go too crazy.

I had a huge injury in 2021.  I couldn’t do anything remotely sporty again until 2023.

How i passed the time?  I read more, got into cooking, and finally watched Breaking Bad.  But it mostly just sucked a lot as I couldn’t be active at all.  I was super depressed for much of it.

You’ll get through the other side eventually, hang in there.  it gets much better.

Injuries are really hard on mental health. The people who I’ve seen have the easiest time are those that take their athletic energy and turn it into something else, eg taking flying lessons, writing, learning an instrument or language, etc. My teen just finished the worlds craziest paint by number project, she worked on it 2 hours a day for months. It was fascinating to watch her find purpose in something so seemingly boring, but the sense of pride when she finished was amazing and I was really struck by how she set herself a simple goal and chipped away at it day by day. Could you volunteer somewhere to help others? Take a class? You need something that gives you a daily purpose.

Middle of Jan to middle of March I was non weight bearing. I read, some Netflix and some of the other things mentioned here. For me what worked was focusing on what I could do. Diet, I changed mine and researched supplements that would support healing. I let go of some habits that were not supportive. I moved what I could for a certain amount of time and a certain amount of times every day. I just focused on getting past that part and what I would do after.

I have a TFCC injury and I have been coping by being sad and running more.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
