Climber Charles Barrett Arrested for Yosemite Sexual Assaults

I feel sick reading some of these letters. Are you f'ing kidding me: For those who don’t follow the world of climbing, it would help to know that Charlie could be considered famous, like the Kobe Bryant of climbing. He has written multiple, popular books on the subject and is very well known among the climbing world. I have witnessed over the years that many women within the climbing community are attracted to him and even follow him like they are his fans. I have also seen women become emotional and upset when rejected by him, as can happen with any relationship. However, these relationships I witnessed were always about building love and friendship, never tumultuous or abusive. Regardless of how much these writers knew about Charlie Barrett's full story and submssion timing (before vs after verdict)...they sure give a good view into his reality distortion bubble. Thus I believe the letters are worth being shared into the public sphere. I'm just going to re-post what one of his victims, NotSaying Sparrow, wrote earlier in this thread: NotSayin Sparrowwrote: |

La La Landwrote: Yea after reading the sparrow message above that put it in perspective for me, thus why I deleted my comment you. |

La La Landwrote: This one, to me, reads like Charlie wrote it for himself... PWZwrote: DELETED my snarky comment about this person because I don't believe in doxing people even when they pretty much dox themselves... Also, PWZ, I LOVE the What We Do in the Shadows reference! Bravo! |

I think the takeaway here is that if you weren’t the subject of a past, present, or future —real or attempted— sexual/romantic relationship with someone accused of such crimes, then perhaps you should just STFU when it comes to judgments in that arena. Basically it’s the epitome of “stay in your lane”, and “think before you speak”.

Re. these letters: When I lived in Colombia I used to know a guy who was the leader of that country's intelligence service. He was really good at his job and dedicated. He was actually quite fun to know and always treated me and my family with the greatest respect. If something had happened to my loved ones during our time there he would have been the first call I made. |

Close this crap thread Andrew, its over, the sicko is locked up, the end. |

why close it when there’s still a chance some of terrible members of the community will out themselves? |

It is good to see justice be served. It's not surprising to see the letters of support, even from climbers. Katie Lambert, Michael Pang - I assume they didn't realize their letters would be public. Michael Pang's letter especially is insane. Are people suggesting that these letters are fake? That feels more believable to me then saying "CB doesn't belong in prison since he gave a homeless guy $5" It's definitely interesting reading this thread from beginning to end. There are a ton of the normal annoying MP trolls in the first 10 or so pages (FrankPS, etc.). Page 26 is where Eric Marx spews some insane victim blaming. Anyways - I hope we can keep the thread open so people continue to out themselves as pieces of shit. |

Mark Pilatewrote: His lawyers didn't write the letters, come on. Letters in support are commonplace, even for murders. Those writing are only writing to what they know, their perception of what they know. I don't know what they knew about the case, any priors, how well, how thoroughly then knew him. I would, however, bet money that CB did not give them a terribly complete picture of what was going on. People are duped by cons all the time. Even people whose very job it is to root them out. It also bears restating that he was facing a life sentence. That prospect, if known, is going to bear heavily upon the person who is asked to write a letter of support. |

Jason ELwrote: I’m not saying they are outright fakes, I’m saying they were likely based on “templates” provided to them. I’d be seriously surprised if they were all original compositions written from the heart and from scratch. Of course such signed letters are common place, but so is “assisting” them with the composition. |

Jason ELwrote: What if anything would be a women's reason to defend a man arrested for chronic physical abuse and sexual assault within their own community and perhaps even professional career -- on the slim chance that this man is somehow the victim of an intense and coordinated conspiracy smear campaign of their personal character (and for what end)? Sounds insane even to tap that out. And who bankrolled this monster? You don't make shit writing guidebooks. |

One piece of this that might need re-visiting or emphasis is the critical role of Safe Outside. I could be wrong, but my understanding is that the Safe Outside platform helped get this moving. A brave, important project. |
