Thank you for following and keeping us up to date on this, Andrew. I am glad that the judge took seriously his continued efforts to manipulate and intimidate his victims and the system even after his conviction and decided to keep him behind bars. I hope his victims will feel safe and free again.

Good to see that a convicted rapist who shows no remosre for his crimes, doubles down and slanders the victims is given the sentence the law allows. Good to see the justice system working as it should

Here is a link to the US's sentencing memorandum.  It's worth the read.

https://www.courtlistener.com/docket/64936484/254/united-states-v-barrett/

I intended to go through it for a cursory rack and stack of the Offense Levels and compare that to he USSG table, but got derailed by the just first or second paragraph where it discusses his DUI arrest and how he slashed the tires of the park ranger who arrested him, and made death threats to the ranger's kid - death threats to the kid a decade after the DUI arrest in question.

The memorandum requested a life sentence.

Barrett had a criminal history score of 9 (nine) going into this.  Yikes.  That's generally a +50% kicker right there.

[now back to the sentencing memo...]

Wow, what a relief,  that link to the sentencing memorandum was definitely worth the read. I was really worried the court wouldn't get it right (he had gotten away with so much already, i was afraid it would be another brock turner deal), but they absolutely did get it right thank goodness, and what was written in the memo was excellent! He was a complete danger and menace to society, on track to murder had they not stopped him with this sentence. My Heart is with the brave victims too, I hope you can go forward in life without fear of him now, that things improve emotionally and you can heal and find peace in your future, and are able to get back to participating in what you want to in life without fear.

Edit-can anything be done to protest Inyo County's DA who was doing nothing to help his victims,  kept dropping charges and saying the same kind of stuff about him being a great climber-like that excuses anything?! Ignoring when he'd defy restraining orders? That DA makes me furious... can he be "not retained" or "fired" for negligence... I am not familiar with how it works.

One thing I've learned about identifying narcissist psychopaths is they will have a sob story and say they are the victim-it's outrageous. This aligns perfectly with C.B.s behavior and conspiracy claims.

So I guess all of his famous climber friends who haven't said shit can finally condemn this motherfucker and not all look like passive accomplices.

Not committing sexual assault isn't a hard thing to do. Hope he likes the bed he made in his forever home.

Justice may not be swift on this country sometimes, but it sure feels good when it finally happens.
May the victims rest easier and have some sort of weight lifted from them with this outcome.

Please, let’s not rush to judgment and let the legal system…..oh wait.   Nevermind.

(Crickets chirping in the background as all “defenders” slink away and likely delete anything they can delete —that they haven’t already).

Don’t forget who backed this m’fer even after the shit came out.

Andrew,

Thanks again. Curious if you have any insight when a transcript for the trial would be available.

I'm curious as to what some of the witnesses for the defense had to say. I understand some were no-shows, but some were fairly high-profile.

Transcripts for federal trials have to be ordered from the court. It should be available now but they're $$$. I'll ask and see if anyone I know has a copy and, if so, if you can get a copy of it from them.

Andrew, you missed one more famous climber-rapist.

He made the local news.

It would be too much to expect he’ll ever own the pain he caused, he clearly earned a place amongst caged monsters.

District Attorneys are elected in California. The current Inyo DA is Thomas Hardy and he appears to have been in office since 2013, so the time period matches a lot of the events you mention. Also, I think it was the Mono DA who allowed CB to plead to much reduced charges after he stalked and threatened to kill one of his past victims.

I don't think protesting is going to do much but, perhaps, there's an ambitious career prosecutor who wants to run against the current incumbents? The history of going so easy on crime like these examples seems like it's made for a good political campaign by a newcomer.

There was also a segment of the community who wouldn’t talk to investigators, or to me, for a different reason: an apparent desire to close ranks around one of their own. A Park Service law-enforcement officer assigned to the Yosemite case described this group to me as “old-guy climbers.” They were mostly men in their fifties and sixties who were invested in minimizing sexual assaults and harassment while elevating climbing accomplishments. As friends and mentors of Barrett’s, some of them were angry or mystified that he was being investigated at all. Out of more than a dozen professional climbers who had well-publicized relationships with Barrett, only a few agreed to talk.
