hahaha!!

I tried that exact same Ring setup before going with Chain Links!!

Edit:

Ok.. not exactly the same…

I like the idea of tying it down on that Yellow grab strap on the Metolius bags.
Yeah, that part of the far end hauling system seems to be pretty standard now.

Neither of my metolius bags have these. Anyone else?  Probably just tie off to the long strap?

Quinn, can you elaborate on that? What do you like about the quick links more than the rings?

Hey John-

I found that the Chain Links gave me wider spread with minimally increased hang..

one of the pics I posted on the first page of this thread shows the spread.. full 12” between bags

I’ve studied this photo on IG, and think it’s the cleanest iteration I’ve seen. I was planning on emulating it, but before I ordered the DMM swivel with interchangeable shackles, I obtained a petzl swivel for sweet deal.

I’m wondering though, do you and Mark ever feel the need to dock your bags further apart? And if so, how do you unlink each bag from the main swivel system, if at all? If that is an option one would like to have, would it make more sense to use lockers in place of the rap rings? If it’s a non issue, I may use the captive swivel I have, but use two Petzl RING OPENs in place of the captive rap rings shown here. Thoughts?

I haven’t found that I needed or wanted to dock the bags further apart than is allowed by this set up.  We always dock bags on one side of the ledge or the other, usually climbers left.   I used to use a set of lockers in place of the rings as you mentioned, but I found that the shape and gates of the lockers caused a  binding and cross loading situation more often than I’d like.   The uniform shape of the rap rings and the fact there’s no gate to get hung up simplifies and streamlines the system.   This configuration has worked incredibly well for me.

Skot, what are those shrink-wrapped rope terminations on either side?  Tethers for smaller bags/poop tube?

Thanks for clarifying. Exactly the info I was looking for.

Correct!   They are tether cords,  the blue one is for my Metolius Sentinel support bag (extra water, trekking poles, rain fly and haul ledge bag). The orange one is the gear closet ( the rack that the leader isn’t currently wearing). I don’t like the knots that take up extra space so I sew the ends into eyes, then swipe (wrap) around the stitching and cover it all with heavy duty marine grade heat shrink just for good measure.
Yes,  I am very particular about my gear!!!  Haha.

If you change the orientation of the main Biner on Skots bag it’s easy.. if you look at the pic I posted on the first page of this thread that uses chain links- you’ll see that if the docking tether is on the spine of the biner, with the gate facing the link. you can easily unclip from the swivel/links and let the bag swing away..

that said… it’s usually not necessary

Going to test this configuration out this week.. with the docking tether not on the main bag biner, and only through the longer strap- the bag will always be open when it’s docked.. and eliminate the need for a system to disconnect the short strap when it’s weighted.. also let’s the bags spread a little more without disconnecting them…

We’ll see how it goes

Makes perfect sense… Thanks for pointing that out!

Reviving… So Quinn, how did it go? If you can remember, as it was a while ago! Any further updates/improvements?

As far as that exact version-

The connection: Swivel + Chain Links is great!!

Short hang with good spread.. it’s a good 2 bag set-up..

Connecting the docking tether to just the long haul bag strap as pictured is irritating- as it causes the bag to hang wonky at the belays..

As Kevin said-

We’ve moved on to new versions of this now.

We have been hanging  one bag low- off a length of rope.. in a train configurations- with a day bag and gear closet hanging at the top- next to the other bag. Keeps the anchor clutter down and makes it easy to access the closet and food/ water.

I do use the cockring on the long haul bag loop of the low bag.. to pull the low bag up to the anchor at bivys- and it works well for that..

maybe I’ll post a pic of the set up we are taking on WOEML Friday..

Noob question—why do folks use two separate docking cords for each of the bags? Why not hang everything off of one cord attached to the fair end hauler biner? Seems like it would make it easier to get the bags off the anchor, and I don’t think you lose any height. Does it make it harder to access the bags when they’re hanging at the anchor?

Redundancy

Each docker backs up the other..

Also- gives you the ability to separate the bags at Bivys

Thanks Kevin and Quinn! I’d love to see a pic of the final set up… Have a blast on WOEML!
