Single most important piece of gear a climber owns in 2024 is what?

Helmet, rope, harness, shoes? Has it changed over time? |

Automobile. Except in a few special places, or for the highly motivated, climbing is a motor sport. |

My climbing life would be pretty different without good free shoes or a helmet or much of my whats-its and gizmos, but I could make do with swami belts and leg loops and hip belays or munters, but I absolutely would not lead on a static rope like the old days. The only other thing I can think of that comes close is bolts, but a good, reliable dynamic rope matters a lot more than that-- we could make do with pegs in drilled pockets if necessary and have some old timey sport climbing. Maybe it would be part of climbing ethics to give all the pegs a good whack on your way down or something. =) |
