Has the abbreviation FA changed?

I could have sworn that FA was first ascension, as in the first person and time the route was documented as climbed. I keep seeing people on super popular routes tagging it with FA as in their first ascent.

Has the meaning changed? Am I already yelling at kids to get off my lawn?

The meaning has not changed.  Those kids need to get off your lawn.

FFA, FWA  - were things at one time

And splitter cracks have no offset.

FFA still has validity and relevance.

It should be noted that “FFA” has turned into two meanings now. First free ascent (original meaning) and first female ascent. Both could be argued to have “relevance and validity”.

The new Sydney Bouldering guide has come out with no FA names or dates listed. Just the problems and their descriptions. The history of climbing and development of the area, and of notable classics, is described in the introductions for each section.

A dodge to avoid controversy and the hard work of sorting it out - or is it futuristic and respectful?

There’s nothing controversial about 80% of the routes out there. Yes there are controversial routes here and there, regarding FA’s but it’s really not a huge thing that encompasses the majority of routes at most crags. I understand making an entire section dedicated to the main players in the development of areas but it’s also nice to see the FA’s of each individual route as well.

I am a new guy (started in January) and have only heard people use it as First Ascent, and then FFA as first free ascent normally and first female ascent occasionally (but always with the acronym laid out nearby to avoid confusion).

They are confusing FA, with FE.  FE is a First Experience. Everyone can their own FE, at any time, but there is only one true FA.  Those kids will grow up some day I can only hope, damn millennials, as I shake my fist at a cloud.

Headpoint = successful lead after practice, so perfectly fine for a FA.

The little grommets have buggered the language once again, there's no getting around it.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
