Redacted Squad - offensive route names on MP
|
|
Years ago a committee was created to correct offensive route names on MP. We still have many route names listed as Redacted. When will this project be completed? What are the next steps? |

Gator Pussy V10 forever Edit: This was a boulder at Pawtuckaway that got redacted, but for some reason a boulder named "General Lee" did not... |

They satisfied their guilt trip and have moved on to other knee jerk causes. |

grug gwrote: At this point, I suspect OnX is trolling for X’s Elon to buy Mountain Project. |

Its not cool to leave 100s of route names as redacted indefinitely. |
|

it wasent cool to redact them in the first place. |

Kevin DeWeese wrote: https://www.mountainproject.com/name-review-process Looks like the regional admins help get a new name after a voting process, says it takes a while. |

Adam Rwrote: I guess that was announced and I missed it? Hopefully that process includes simply messaging the person who contributed the route to MP with the redacted name. I once checked with the submitter of a redacted route name who happened to be the FA. OnX had never let them know the name was redacted. And the FA-ist was willing to rename it. They just had no idea. Makes this all sound like a really hollow effort - or a weird power grab. I pointed this out at the time but OnX never replied. And, lol, I can't be bothered with reading the name-review-process. I don't recall it being sent out for comment. |

I think the redaction happened when Mp was for sale. OnX seems to not be concerned |

Robert Gregorywrote: you mean a boulder named after a confederate general? idk, why redact "gator pussy"? |

grug gwrote: It's not making them unclimbable so what's the real issue? |

https://www.mountainproject.com/search?q=redacted If you click the "Improve this page" icon, then the "Route Details" you can see the original names of the routes. In my opinion, many of them are not actually offensive. Mountain project must have flagged a bunch of words, and if the route has those words it was redacted. There are over 700 routes and boulder problems that were redacted. I honestly have trouble finding ones that are racists, sexist, ableist; although I am SURE some of them are. |

So, "Shockley's Ceiling" at the Gunks was changed to "The Ceiling" because William Shockley's views on eugenics were offensive. (I still call it "Shockley's Ceiling") |

People, don’t try and make sense of it. |

wivanoffwrote: I kind of like plain "Without." But to be more explicit it could be called "The Ceiling Without a Ceiling." |

wivanoffwrote: I find this shocking. Have they cancelled the VW beetle yet? I hear the guy who commissioned it had some whackadoodle ideas about eugenics too |

John Clarkwrote: “The Wolfsburg-based automaker discontinued the Beetle in 2019 and there hasn't been a direct successor so far.” I think they actually redacted the beetle before Shockleys. the V stands for “people” the W for “woke”. |

wivanoffwrote: At least on gunks apps, it has been changed to “the ceiling without,” and the 5.7 variation is now called “the ceiling within one.” |
