Partner Finder Reviews?

Would anyone ever use this? I use the partner finder frequently, usually everything is great, occasionally it's not. Might be nice to see if your potential partner is a 1 star or a 4 star belayer...?

Personally all I would need to know is someone is safe, not a grouch, and is going to do what they say they do in their post.

Thoughts?

This has been proposed before and was determined to be a bad idea. I'm too lazy to search for the threads.

To me, it still seems like a bad idea.

Not a bad idea.  Keep it simple.

Did the climber represent himself/herself accurately?

Was the climber an attentive belayer?

Would you climb with again.

Answers could be strongly agree, agree, disagree, strongly disagree?

What could go wrong?

Well, I haven't met YOU yet, have I, hmmmm?????

My opinions are all based on forum presence, in the absence of physical attributes. Where the f--- is THAT on your list, eh? I'm the one stuck staring at your backside, after all. What's in it for me? Where's THAT category??? What are you planning on doing for ME? I was camped near an effin professional barrista recently, ffs, and STILL didn't get a coffee delivered to my sleeping bag.

Sheesh.

And?

OMG...

I actually agree with Frank.

Best (caffeine dependent, unless there's that attribute stuff going on), OLH

All of the reasons already stated above, PLUS I've been told on so many occasions that X person is a "great belayer" only to discover that they're an accident waiting to happen.  Go to any popular crag on any given weekend and you'll see what people think passes as a decent belay.

The devil is in the details. Sure, we all want safe, competent, pleasant-to-be-around belayers that accurately represent themselves. But...

Pleasant, competent, safe--according to whom?

Example: A few weeks ago I was approached by a young gym staff member who very politely told me that the hand-over-hand method I was using (for TOPROPE belay on a gri-gri, ffs!) was not ok, and could I please use PBUS, and also not belay left-handed on a gri-gri for lead, because it was not as safe? (sure, I agreed, at least while she was watching, even though I was tested, and passed, at the same gym using the hand-over-hand technique for TR, and using my modified left-handed lead belay technique on a gri-gri, and hand-over-hand technique is one of the three recognized by AMGA as safe/appropriate).
Last weekend I had to help an out-of-town friend pass his lead belay test at the same gym. Since I was asked just a couple of weeks earlier not to use my left-handed belay technique, I took the opportunity to confirm with the person giving a test that they wanted me to belay right-handed. I was perfectly happy to do whatever they wanted, and I wasn't the one being tested, anyway, but I had the opportunity to ask, so I did. There were two gym staff members present, they asked me to demonstrate my method, and said it was completely ok to continue doing it that way. So, according to one person I was being unsafe. According to two other people (and, you know, AMGA...) I wasn't.

Would you know who said in the partner finder that the person was unsafe? Would you know exactly what was thought to be unsafe? Would you know if the person judging someone as safe/unsafe actually has qualifications and experience to really know safe from unsafe?

Whoa Helen. Who pissed in your coffee?
You might need to change your name to GOLH. Grumpy?

I am very disappointed in your performance in this thread. Very. Disappointed.

At least climbing grades aren’t subjective.

Whenever I see a friend post up for partners, I comment with an endorsement. Others have done the same for me.

I often pick from multiple partner responses in a thread based on if someone has vouched for them previously. It takes a bit of digging but I'm usually researching their history anyway.

Ten years of climbing with rando partners and only one person I wouldn't climb with again (and not for safety competence reasons). Many rando partners have become lifelong friends.

Helen is that you?  Are you ok?  Did you fall off the wagon?  Not the Helen I’ve come to know and love.

Did you misread Greg’s post and think he said attractive belayer instead of attentive belayer?

Yeah, see, this is why ratings are a fail for some of us. Not attractive. Attentive .....maybe. Entertaining....

Hm.

I was merely hoping to give Greg (or others) opportunities to shine as the keyboard smartasses most of us are.

So, Hank, thanks for swinging punches on my behalf, although I'm a total nondrinker long term, so there's not even a wheelbarrow, let alone a wagon to consider. Pretty darn nice, though, from a guy who pegged me as "batshit crazy" once upon a time! Yes, MPers, OLH managed to not only pick a fight with Hank Caylor, but won! Mostly cuz I never quite caught up with whatever was going on, in the first place, most likely, but we got all niced out with each other, eventually!   And yes I'm flirting. Cuz...Hank Caylor. Sheesh!

But see, where's the categories for that?

Entertainment factor on MP? Internet brawling skills?

Mano a mano bare fisticuffs? Well, okay, mano a old lady, but hey, I try.

To actually offer a semi lucid reply to the subject at hand, no, partner rating seems a bad idea, especially if it can be done anonymously, with no backstory. Even the anonymous like buttons get used to reinforce meanness sometimes. Like Fritz, I've definitely vouched for people, though. People need to vet their partners themselves. Climbing takes judgement.

Or wild abandon.

Best, Helen

i can’t think of a good way to do it but would be nice to leave a bad review for people who bail. Don’t mind shitty belayers but I can’t stand getting bailed on day of plans

This is an idea I could get behind

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
