I have known people to hold their breath when scared. also, deep breathing keeps you from getting pumped as quickly.

The breathing thing actually is a thing.  My experience as a martial arts instructor BINTD was that it is very common for beginners to actually hold their breath when they get scared.  the  various breath control methods absolutely help me get through scary climbs and extra physical climbs.

Nobody forgets how to breathe. They just forget to do it

Hold your ground! Hold your ground!

Sons of Gondor, of Rohan, my brothers,

I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me.

A day may come when the courage of men fails,

when we forsake our friends

and break all bonds of fellowship,

but it is not this day.

An hour of wolves and shattered shields,

when the age of men comes crashing down,

but it is not this day!

This day we fight!!

By all that you hold dear on this good Earth,

I bid you stand, Men of the West!!!

On the receiving end of such "encouragement", what do you want?

Me, mostly nothing. Shut up and don't break my concentration unless I ask for something, or perhaps if the rope is behind my leg.

In your best backwoods redneck impression:

"C'MON now GIT AFTER IT! YEEE BUDDY C'MON! GIT YER FEET UP THERE BUDDY"

Suprisingly easy to riff on and entertaining (for you, at least).
