I don't see a thread about this yet, so I thought it wise to inform everyone.

See the comments on the Goodro's page as well as a pic submitted by Nicolas Le.

As usual the media's reporting of this is poor.  And it's weird that S&R required a drone to find them??

My condolences to all involved!  Such a terrible accident that could happen to any of us.

The block that the climber has their right foot on is what came out.

I wonder if the wetter than usual weather we've been having contributes to shifting and rockfall.

Perhaps, but that block has been suspect for a very long time. I cannot remember placing gear until above it

If it is worth anything, I was at storm mountain Friday afternoon and at least reservoir ridge felt flakey  and like a lot of “holds” wanted to break, I don’t know if has any correlation to storm island but here it is for the record.

Just speculating here, but there was a cam still in the crack about 3' above the first roof. Perhaps the leader weighted the foothold (on the block that fell away) while placing the cam, and that's when the whole slab collapsed. So sorry for those involved in this accident.

Holy shit that is terrifying. That thing gets climbed daily...

Wasn’t there a similar death some years back? Someone climbing early spring in BCC and a huge block came out?

I climbed at JHCOB wall on 5/12, the same day as this accident. I encountered some loose rock, and even blew up a few holds, but this was on a pitch known for being loose, not a trade route. Thankfully we walked away.

Are you thinking of the LCC block that blew from the base of Satan's corner?

Is there any information about who passed - climber or belayer?

Yikes. I hate to say it but perhaps this route should be bolted.

Good contribution per usual.

Good contribution per usual.

You’re welcome but I take it back, looking more closely at the pics it looks too fractured to take bolts safely. Hopefully nothing else is loose on it.

Edit: There IS more loose blocks on this route noted in the comments a week ago.

Saw this on the Facebook post as I was confused about the drone usage as well:

"One of the first UPD officers on scene had a drone and put it up immediately to get a view of the accident. This can quickly confirm the number of injured patients and other details. The officers don't usually go up to the scene as they are tasked with controlling traffic, calling for resources, coordinating with UFA paramedics, determining landing zones for helicopters(both Air Med and DPS for this accident). As the volunteer rescue team members respond from home, work, etc from the valley, we listen to all of this over the radio so when we arrive and are given assignments,we can hit the ground running with as much info as possible."

^Yeah that is nuts to see so many people talking about a loose block followed by "loose block fell and killed someone".

Looks like it was different than the one people were concerned about. Stay safe out there.

Sounds like a crowbar might be needed for some of these climbs.

Some dudes were up there knocking down plenty today. There were unsuspecting hikers below that nearly took some head shots. If you wanna do a good deed have a spotter below you so they don’t get smoked by your trundling.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
