" You could take more steroids & pills or whatever they got, health growth hormones & all that stuff, but listen you could be in the best physical shape of your life, but if you don't go out there with a good mental perspective it's going to turn out disastrous."  MIKE TYSON

For me to maintain 130 lbs. @ 5'8" I needed 6000 calories on training & race days & about 4000 on off days. After I retired & had to drop to 2000 or less. Now at 68, I take in even less.

I never drank alcohol when I was racing because I didn't like it. I started drinking when I started climbing with Welchmen in the early 80s. Guy was my best drinking partner, we open two beers Guy drinks his I drink half of mine then Guy finishes mine & we open two more! Guy is 50% bigger than I am.

A well balanced diet of healthy foods, rather than looking for a silver bullet, by going from one fad diet to another, seems the best approach.

There is no silver bullet, only minor tweeks.

Genetics and luck are not in our control, but diet (and activity) can be.

On the money, IMHO.  Hoping for that magic pill or Elixir of Youth just opens one up to scams and other half baked ideas.

I can train 100x and eat/nutriate myslef 100x better (whatever that means), I will still not be able to climb as well as Ward.
I am only using Ward as an example because we are the same age and I know how well he climbs and boulders.
I am happy with what I can do and what I can't, and never be able to, do physically. As a friend is fond of saying "we are not all interchangeable minions!".
Being realistic plays a bit part in being happy, beyond just being content.

Is someone talking about a fad diet or silver bullet?  I like Ward’s statement about having to change his diet every 10 years.  Me, too.  There comes a time when it’s not all flowing the way it used to and it’s time to take a minute and recalibrate.

I had to share my KFC masterpiece.  I had all the ingredients except the savory.  I didn’t make biscuits or gravy but next time for sure.  This was very short notice.  The whole meal was great!  Tony doesn’t care for chicken but he enjoyed this.

The last few times I had KFC it was horrible. Way too salty and gross tasting. Heck grocery store chicken is much better than KFC imop. Any way you look at it you are much better off cooking at home or in the van.

So you literally dunk the chicken in oil and sort of boil it in oil? Of course we have KFC here (I never eat it) but we never have home made fried chicken.

KFC precooks their chicken with a pressure cooker, and then after they apply the coating, it's put in the deepfryer for a very short time just to get the coating crispy.  At least that is the way they used to do it.

I think this must be a picture of me in front of my new favorite route that I have never climbed, Trix. It looks like no one has ever climbed  it or at least never written a review and I don’t know what is wrong with people that they don’t see the beauty of this route. Why isn’t there a line?  It is roadside after all and it has a lean on it looks like it could topple any minute. Anyway it’s another reason to keep feeling better.

I can’t believe this but I am on the verge of leaving the PPO and going back to Kaiser today. Tony thinks it’s a big mistake. Maybe I just haven’t learned how to work within the Eisenhower system. For six months of trying and seeing all kinds of specialists they seem so extraordinarily busy and unconcerned. I miss the ability to call the Kaiser advice nurse after hours or on weekends if there’s an urgent problem and if they can’t solve it they get a doctor on the line. I miss that all my medication‘s were streamlined and I never had to fight for anything. I’ve spent hours and hours on the phone for various routine supplies and meds and then had to go back again because there was some hitch somewhere. I am still just reflecting on my visit to the infectious disease doctors – – there were two of them, sisters I believe, who reviewed my testing together and said they had never seen a Lyme test and didn’t know what to make of the EBV test. They also didn’t know what they would recommend regarding the blastocysts that defied 5 rounds of anti-parasitic drugs and still came back.  They said they would “research this” and get back to me— 3 months ago.  I’m overwhelmed there. I think the correct attitude is that there is no great healthcare right now… not here or anywhere and accept that and choose the best.

As for the KFC…. It was so wonderful to get an approximation of a junk food I craved.  I wonder about pressure cooking it first.  I knew the gluten free crust might not be quite like the wheat-based. That was ok but the chicken wasn’t quite as tender as KFC.  Close but not quite.  I’ll research this.

Lori, I think Spy Mountain might be the ideal place to start your comeback.  It's like Leisure World for craggers.

I think there is a terminology gap:  KFC does not pressure cook their chicken first, they use an industrial pressure fryer.  You can approximate it with a home deep fryer if you only do 1 or 2 pieces at a time with the chick at close to room temp (otherwise you will lower the oil temp while frying resulting in soggy chicken); alternately, in an air fryer (somewhat less like the real thing, but healthier).  But you'll never match the coating exactly, that is a well kept secret.

What do you do with all the oil afterwards? I feel guilty using the amount I use to make papadums. BTW papadums with mango chutney are very nice, but if I eat too many I get the runs. Do you guys use that term? ‘The runs’?  I think it may be very Aussie.

In industrial settings, they use it multiple times then sell it to a recycler.  I don't know for home use because I never deep fry and only use a tablespoon or 2 of olive or avocado oil for any cooking.  When I use oil in baking, there is no residual.  Many folks in Kentucky (or the southern US in general), use bacon grease or lard for pan frying/cooking and reuse it a few times, but not for deep frying.

And yes, the "runs" is a common US term

Well our tiny little peace and love community in Joshua tree has had another incident. I was half awake at 4 AM and heard a boom that  sounded maybe like a gun. Tony said don’t go near the door and he called 911. The dispatch immediately said don’t go outside, it’s dangerous, keep your doors locked. I looked out the window and wondered how did I sleep through this? The whole street was lit up with cop cars and huge trucks and cops ducked  behind their vehicles ordering my neighbor to come out with his hands up which he wouldn’t do. So they brought in some kind of a tank that had a long arm in front of it with a battering ram and just tore out the garage door and broke down the front door.  Eventually he came out with his hands behind his head.

The thing is his kid was there. He managed to get out and spend those hours at the police station but I sat with him a little while this morning. The house looks like a war zone it is shot up everywhere, walls have been punched out. I helped the son persuade their two cats to come out from under the bed and into their carriers.  There’s really not much house left.

I feel very foolish and naïve. I just didn’t know how bad things could get for someone… I didn’t expect it to be next-door. I really like my neighbor – – he’s a good guy but he’s needed help for a long time. I’ve been in my own world and not ready to take on more but you can’t just draw a perimeter around your home and refuse the outside world. I have felt that living around so much darkness has impacted my health and there’s reason to believe we have been in direct danger too.

Peace and love.

Just another day out here on the sand Lori.  You heard a guy took a handful of shots at me in December while I was walking my dog, in my own fenced yard?  People are dangerous.

The hippies out here pour it into the tank of their smoke belching 1983 Mercedes station wagons as they drive around saving the planet.

No I hadn’t heard.  Today I’m just sad. It’s been a long night/morning and it’s hard to walk out my front door and see the destruction next door.  Before we moved here I promised myself we would go year by year—reassess annually whether we should stay.  I thought maybe the weather or the ruggedness might be a problem and we could only know by trying it.  I never thought it would be this.  I think I’m just a little overwhelmed today… gonna take a nap and give this time.

Add: I guess the boom I heard at 4 AM was called a flash bang. I think that’s what blew the garage door off.

on the bright side of things it could be a good time to buy the house next door and rent it

Makes me chuckle every time I think about it...friend from Bozeman stopped by to grab a coffee after hunting and someone snapped a pic of his ride a few years ago.  And, yeah, his Mercedes runs on oil from the local Chinese restaurant.  Smells like egg rolls when he's rollin' down the street.

Can't complain...I've had elk at his house a few times.

Lori, so sorry it got to that, but maybe this will be a kickstart for better for the neighbors? That kind of thing can happen anywhere. People go downhill, hit the low spot. The one on our street was a suicide, after the cops lobbed whatever it was they lobbed into the house. A lot of noise, that went on for hours.

These days, they have a mental health officer(s) in the system, and do everything they can to avoid this.

So, yeah, take time to process this. Some places might be better, or better at hiding it, some worse, but no place is exempt.

As to oil for deep frying?

I rarely deep fry, but when I do, I just use my big stir fry pan. Pour out the remaining oli, filtering it back into the bottle. Stick that into the frig and use it up over time. Or plan on a second tempura binge soon! Tempura is my sole deep frying one I won't give up. Everything else is done some other way now.

"Fried" chicken is an oven fried thing for me now. Skinless legs and thighs, dipped in plain yogurt. Shake in seasoned flour mixture. Onto a pan coated with cooking spray, cooking spray on top, bake. I'm sure it could go as a gluten free, too. Recipe is from "In the Kitchen with Rosie", who was personal chef to Oprah way bitd. Also the first time I heard of oven fries.

Going out to eat tonight, at our local Ethiopian place! So yummy, and fun, too, eating with your hands!

Best, Helen
