June 2023 Climbers Over 50 City of Rocks Meet-up

It's been fun in the past few years so let's do it again! I know of a few folks who have already made plans to be there; hopefully we can get another good group of climbers from all over.

I will be there from June 7 to June 25. Others can come for any or all of that time period.

I volunteer to keep track of a list of who's coming, when they'll be there, and other helpful info.

I recommend that if you want to join in you should make campsite reservations (on reserveamerica.com) as soon as possible.

Looking forward to a fun time!

I'm always up for a trip to City! I'll figure when I'm coming so as to meet up with as many as I can, once you get the other's dates in here.

Thanks Brandt, for posting this up! I've been thinking COR sooooo much lately! But, hey, snowshoes aren't my footwear of choice there! The one time was a great trip too, though!

City in January!

Reservations for camping do fill up, especially weekends. Keep the City of Rocks rv park in mind, and there's a new rv/camping place now too. Basically across the road from Rock City! It's basic, but they've put in the infrastructure. Don't remember what they call themselves.

Best, Helen

I'll be there!  Arrive June 11, depart June 25.  Hoping that there will be a lot of attendees.  In McCall we have the Memorial Route on Slickrock, rated as the #3 multipitch sport climb in the US.  That was before Flyboys went up so maybe it's #4 now.  Trailhead is 11 miles from my house.  So, if any of the attendees want to climb that consider going to McCall with me on the 25th.

That’s ridiculous. According to who?

Climbing Magazine No. 371.  But I mis-stated.  It was a listing of the tallest (Over 1,000ft.) bolted routes UNDER 5.10.

Did you mean 5? Or 50? Don't even remember where 5 is, lol! Except first one apart from 1-4 up at Twin Sisters.

All, I'm hoping to see as many people as I can, and get more climbing in this year, although I'll never get after it like the rest of you do! I'd still like to find some new to me routes, but those are getting scarce, at the low level I can climb. Mostly down to gear routes or super easy zero protection stuff, lol!

Anyone gonna need an RV designated space for a van? I'm willing to keep that in mind when I book, for a second vehicle to share my site.

Best, Helen

Edit to add, looked up 5. About as close to Elephant rock as it gets!

Okay, after way too much dithering about, I booked site 41 (Bath rock) for 6/9-15, 15 being departure. That only overlaps with the start, obviously, but if I wanna stay longer, I can probably scrounge around and get something. I might take a walk in anyway, if available when we get there. Free up 41 for someone else.

Looking forward to it!

I did look at the fall availability, just curious. Bread loaves group has some availability, if anyone is feeling ambitious to organize it. I'd be okay with squandering a bit of my child's inheritance and reserving/paying for about a week, if someone else wants to do all the rest of it? And ffs, maybe make me a cuppa coffee some morning??

Hey, this one is book it yourself, so go for it! I love to meet people as much (sometimes more) than climbing.

Definitely crash my party, anytime, although my substance of choice is morning coffee, and I'm generally pretty boring pretty much always, so there is that. If you're there when I am, say howdy. Or not.

Or if you are at COR some other time and see a dinky old lady milling about, feel free to say howdy then also. I've been stopped more than once with "are you Old lady H??!?". The most surprising time was at a crag in CO, lol! I am not a stealth model amongst climbers, and I'm at City a lot, so it's not a surprise there anymore. But fun, always!

Best, H.

climbs sometimes - I meant to mention this before so I'm glad you brought it up. As far as I'm concerned, anyone is welcome to join in on this get-together, regardless of age, climbing ability, etc. If you can put up with a grumpy old guy clawing his way up 5.8 routes, you be fine climbing with me.

I'm hoping to be there from June 7 for a week or two. Could be looking to share a site. Self, spouse, and possibly daughter and friend.

You're more than welcome to share! Just my climbing partner Paul and I. 41 isn't an RV site, though. 39 is right there, it might be unoccupied? I might aim to nab it too, just in case others want to join in. 39 is a walk in, no reservations, and pretty sure also an RV site. I'd love to at least meet your family!

I'm guessing others might offer too. ;-)

I booked site 52 for June 12th-16th, but could stay longer if anyone has space in their site to share:). Looking forward to meeting you all!

June 7 to 25 is a nice range. Sue and I will come for part of it. Our Tundra can easily navigate the rough road to the free BLM camping above Smokey Mountain.

For those of you close to Joshua Tree (Brandt, Dianne, Joan), Sue and I will be there February 18 for a couple weeks. I'm also planning mid March to mid April at Indian Creek. I was lucky to have some nice weather this last November at the Creek.

It looks like I'll be joining you this year. I bought a small trailer so am going to try the RV thing. I've got a site at Smoky Mountain from 6/8-15. My SO Deb and our Blue Heeler Sophie will be joining me.

Brandt, thanks for pulling this together.  I'm looking forward to seeing/meeting all of you.

So far, from what I know, me, Brandt, and Bob will all be at different sites at Smoky also.  Look forward to meeting you.  Phyl

Ken - Our Red Heeler mix Luna is looking forward to playing with Sophie.

I'm keeping a list of folks that are coming, including dates and camping locations. I'll be posting this information later.

Brandt, Jon Shafer and I are cobbling some campsites together and looking at June 11 to 26 as dates.  Unfortunately a good friend passed away recently and his memorial is June 11 so I’ll probably be coming up from Boulder a few days later. Hope to meet and share a rope and conversation.

Hello fellow climbers over 50 and some younger ones. I booked Site 38 at Smoky Mountain for June 10-18. This is my first time to camp in luxury, relatively speaking, at the City. Hope to have some fellow Vegas climber friends join me for the first half of the week, will likely have a vacancy after that. I look forward to meeting some new folks and climbing with all y'all. Fingers crossed for good weather.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
