The Climb on HBO

I'm stoked this will depict what looks like a bunch of "normal" style climbing in it. Like people sport climbing, bouldering, crack climbing, soloing in non-psycho-death terrain. Maybe this will help those who don't really understand anything about climbing get it a little better. Free Solo gives people a crazy ridiculous view of what climbing is, and Dawn Wall is a bit too specific and nuanced for people like my parents to grasp what rock climbing is. |

Dr Logic wrote: Haha - a good exercise. But I do think there's a difference between the ridiculousness of MP and these forums, and watching a TV show. MP isn't the end all be all of the activity - it's a supplement of actually participating in a hobby which I feel is worth practicing because I get something out of it that I'll never get out of merely watching a TV show passively. Looking at routes I may want to try to do makes me inspired to get better to actually get out there. That may be a little different than just being a voyeur in some made-up contest served to me in a format that works best if I'm reasonably bored, reasonably baked, and it's snowing outside. Certainly room for each in my life, but again: priorities. |

saign charlesteinwrote: lol just like any other reality show? can you point me to the climbing-based reality shows you're watching? the only reality TV i've watched in the last 5 years is "Alone" which someone else tried to compare to 'any other lame reality show'... y'all acting like the criterion selection committee over here with your high-falutin' standards, sheesh. |

J Pwrote: Alone sounds like Out of the Wild or Naked and Afraid? Have at it: https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/RealityTV I'm still getting through this season of, "Weekly Church Basement Recovery Group", "Commuting by Bike and Being Flipped Off on the Reg", "Insane Inflation", "Eggs Are $8/Dozen", and my favorite, "Will My Body do its Daily Run Anymore?" to get wrapped up in any other realities shown to me. |

^ dunno "out of the wild" but naked and afraid is very much a bad reality tv show. alone, i like to think, is a step above. good podcast episode about it: outsideinradio.org/shows/th… |

I mean, i would rather watch White Lotus Se03, but i think this is great to see all things considered. Would the trad dads think this is stealing from “Property Brothers: Forever Home?” Lol |

Alright ; So is this the thread for HBO the climb memes, banter, love, shade? I watched a bit this morning. Plenty to laugh at. Jason doing an aquaman yew, everyone going full reality tv attack mode on a climber that chose to bail on a DWS. |
|
|
How do you 'bail' on DWS? |

Long Rangerwrote: This entire thread is a Long Ranger tour de force, but I just wanted to highlight this gem from last year. EmoGote prefers Further Seems Forever, btw |

John Clarkwrote: I know, right? The guy knows three languages, owns multiple businesses, is an executive producer on a soon to be hit tv show on HBO and yeah: can do it all while high as hell. Over here we can't even get off the couch stoned while watching his show. Respect! |

F r i t zwrote: If EmoGote prefers "The Moon is Down" then we can hang. :) |

Jason Millswrote: Oh for sure! If we're talking Chris Carrabba, then he'll bring one of his scene kid friends: |

Long Rangerwrote: Lmao! Someone talked him into this, probably Momoa. Sharma is not “hollywood” and I don’t think he even graduated from a real high school. People have been latching onto Sharma’s fame since the beginning and directing him to do this or that, remember the Ralph Loren purfume??? He’s just along for the ride and the “ownership” he has in any business is simply investment, he’s not the one running it. That said, he’s a wonderful man and the greatest stoke in climbing but people take advantage of him, sucks that this TV show will be his legacy to the general public. |

It’s a fun show- I’m extremely impressed with the first three episodes. Yeah it’s got some of the typical reality TV manufactured drama, but the actual climbing is (so far) pretty much spot-on authentic to reality. It’s definitely the most realistic and relatable representation of climbing that I’ve seen in any mass-market media; compare barely squeaking an on-sight of an 11d DWS versus Free Solo. Give it a shot, it’s probably better than you expect. |

Any idea how they chose the contestants? I was also impressed with the first few episodes. Curious what the requirements are, with people onsighting 12d but being relatively unknown |
