shawn snyder was found guilty of 2 felonies and 1 misdemeanor for his wrong doings at Smith Rock

I’m sure prison will really mellow him out. Prison normally mellows people out. |
|
Not really one to participate in these threads, but hopefully if there are mental health issues there will be help for him. |

Ck out the northern california section, now he apears to be smashing bolted anchors at Mt. Diablo state park. big thread |

When is the sentencing taking place? should we all write letters to the judge? |

Ben Bwrote: Yeah, white people never go to prison. |

I wasn’t gonna comment because every time I have suggested we maybe consider trying to get Shawn some help. I get flamed and am just feeding his “ego” according to mp. Maybe for those who have professional behavioral specialists in their life reach out for guidance. I have no idea but clearly all solutions so far have failed. Maybe there is a family member out there that feels helpless sees threads about Shawn and feel even more helpless tho this thread is pretty tame so far. Regardless of whether someone is a troll or hateful or a criminal or homeless person or whatever you label them, you should at least an approach them with kindness initially. |

Shawn needs help, but he won’t get it from the state. Prison is a deterrent, not rehabilitation despite what everyone wants it to be. |

Salamanizer Skiwrote: As a career long public defender I fully agree with this post, but sometimes the deterrent ‘thing’ actually works. I don’t know Shawn Snyder at all, but when we (Western Mass Climbers Coalition) prosecuted Ken Nichols for trespassing and he had a lecture from the judge, was placed on probation, and had to pay a significant amount in court costs, it has been successful (so far) in keeping him away from the crags that we manage even long after his probationary period ended. Shawn sounds worse but it might work. And, unless he has prior record, probation instead of incarceration is the most likely outcome for this type incident—in which, I believe, no one was actually injured. |

Condemnation and incarceration for the crimes. It seems that he has the cognitive ability to recognize that the behaviors are wrong, punishment might be a deterrent and if so, help him and protect people. And a psychiatric evaluation, at least, and then treatment as needed, if needed. This too would (hopefully) help him and protect anyone around him. Someone who has evaluated him, knows the details of these situations, and has the education/experience to decide what's needed should work on this. A lot of resources and time - available? |

Shawn has a long history of violent behavior. Once he is free he will be back to his same old ways.https://sierrawave.net/mlpd-arrest-man/ |

Alan Rubinwrote: Alan, I believe he has been in the slam before. Might have been 60 days? There is a history there. |

I don’t practice in Oregon and each state—often each judge, is different in sentencing approach, but usually if someone has done time and is subsequently convicted if a felony, a longer sentence is quite likely. But, as others have said, in such situations it is less likely to have any ‘positive’ effect on the offender, so, sadly, we will probably see similar behavior once his ‘time’ is completed. In such situations, instead of rehabilitation or deterrence, incarceration does at least serve the purpose of keeping the offender ‘on ice’ for the length of the sentence. Awful that we have to discuss this in the climbing context. |

Alan Rubinwrote: Comparing Shawn to Ken is like comparing the Hulk to Bruce Banner. Shawn is Ken 10x. If you want to really know what you're dealing with give Hownot2s "interview" a click and watch the confrontation at Smith. In the words of the great Regis Philbin "THIS GUY IS BANANAS!". |
