I miss the 'taco and its historically oriented campfire.  Was some great content there.  And, when the pic's disappeared from the threads...that was a huge bummer and loss.

But...my guess for me, is, that over 90% of the content was fairly unreadable and worthless.  Some of the flame wars were interesting but the constant bickering got pretty old.

Just like here, I pick and choose what to read and participate in.  And, a few peoples' content I seek out, just like on the 'taco.

Good times.

Why Supertopo was better:

A place where real climbers around the country/world could just chat the way we do around a crag or campfire. We rarely talked about climbing but we talked about everything else with climbing peers.  This more than anything made it a valuable media.  I made many dear friends there.

I "met" made so many wonderful people there and many eventually became friends and climbing partners IRL.  The arguments among different political factions were voluminous but easy enough to ignore, and there was a lot of genuine affection among the people posting in the non-politics threads. And it was often laugh out loud funny and truly entertaining. The stories in so many of the threads were amazing.  Campfire storytelling at its finest.  What Spider said about breaking news..one of my best friends (who I met on Supertopo) used to make the joke "I don't even read or watch the news anymore, I just look at Supertopo.  It has all the info I need."

One thing I loved about it was that you could ask any question on any topic, climbing related or car trouble or construction issue or medicine/science, and it would get answered by someone who genuinely knew what they were talking about. Just yesterday my husband and I were looking at some large poop in my backyard (which is inaccessible to dogs) and I was thinking - if I could post this pic to Supertopo I'd have the answer in a minute.

The other thing I enjoyed about Supertopo is nobody ever talked about cordelettes or SERENE anchors or escaping the belay or how to properly use a belay device or...  ;-)

Oh, I'll bet you someone here could identify that poop. Post it up.

If you are wondering what some of the Supertopo people post now, they have a group on Facebook where every climbing photo is from "Spy Mountain." No mention of actual locations that might help you locate the climbs and do them yourself. It's a non-stop laugh fest. Now don't you feel like you are missing out?

This site should have a “campfire” forum.  Like end of a day beers around the fire.  No rules.  Post whatever you want about whatever you want. Just like “no text in the meme thread”,  No whining, flagging, or butthurt allowed in the campfire thread.
don’t go there if you don’t like it and can’t hang.

Here is what users pining for the SuperTopo should do -

1. Go to Politics and Rock Climbing , do not collect 100
2. Create a thread with a title reflecting good old days. Make it descriptive -"SuperTopo Locals Only #1"
2. Post
3. DO NOT FLAG other's posts -MP-proj administrators have no interest in reading any threads here, they only react to flagged posts. And, "moderator" on MP is just a glorified climbing area editor/contributor, they have nothing to do with administration of MP

I think phylp means because it was likely a Supertopo regular who climbed the fence drunk, pooped in the yard and then staggered away. Could just ask who it was on the Taco.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
