If seems you all have been buying up tricams left and right on the forum this year, so now is the time to put them to use. Hang up those SLCDs and hone your skills with some all tricam sends this Tricamuary!

Rules and disclaimers here.

I warmed up for this tricamuary with a couple of sunny N Table Mountain routes I did last year. Corniche, Crack/Bulge, and Hippy School. Placed every size from 0.25-7 with at least one placement in each of the three orientations. First pieces on Crack/Bulge and Hippy School were both two opposing tricams. Smiles for miles. Here’s a picture of my partner Bob seconding Hippy School.

Looking forward to hearing about all your tricam adventures this Tricamuary!

J, after giving you some hell about this last year, I got some tricams (just Black - Brown) and fell under the spell. Not enough to do a full route proper on them but I am following a point system (1 point for placements, +1 point if you have to weight the placements - no using tricams for anchors on multipitch routes in order to avoid your follower from getting points when you swap leads).

I got 2 points on Short Tour at Quarry Wall (bomber pink and a decent Brown. This one could feasibly go on all tricams probably) and 1 point on Frank's Tame Years (another pink). Hoping to get out and bump those numbers up a bit - been climbing some splitter granite lately so haven't been bringing them along as much.

During No Nut November last year, I led Degeneration in Castle Rock using tricams. Can I back-date that?

Tal M,

Hahaha! Welcome to the club! I tell my kids sharing is caring, but I understand the desire to keep all that tricam excellence for yourself. I’m in Denver, so hit me up if you want to get up to do some tricam climbing.

Nice lead. All tricam sends are good sends regardless of date. Now is the time to get some more!

Does anyone understand why Andrew Lamb was competing in Ouray ice comp with giant tricams on his harness? Tricamuary participant? lmao

Tricamuary ice! Conditions weren’t right for leading, but I placed this one as a directional for some tricamuary fun.

Hopefully some of you other tricam lovers got in some fun this weekend.

I managed to get up a small adventure of sorts today. I managed to send the cragmont undercling on only tricams.. although I kinda spaced my gear a bit aggressively and spooked myself a bit near the top.

I was planning to put 2 tricams in the horizontal crack, but I felt like my feet were about to slip out because I forgot to clean my shoes, so I ended up just firing it to the top.

Next weekend my partner and I are heading to yosemite, so hopefully we'll be able to send swan slab gully on tricams! It won't be completely pure though. I barely own enough tricams to somewhat safely lead a pitch, so belays will have to be other gear.

Elaine, if I remember right, you can sling big trees for all the belays on Swan Slab Gully.  You should be good to go.

I have done many an all-Tricam ascent of things (just ask my seconds) -- but it isn't going to happen in mid-winter in Ottawa.  So, sadly, I expect I'll never get to participate.

(I have a double rack small white to green; with (of course) triple pink.  Sadly, only two of the three "big ones".  Need to find the third, somewhere.)

Nice lead Elaine! Good luck in Yosemite. Non-tricam gear is allowed for anchor pieces as your rack requires to keep the tricams for the lead.

David has a good point, and isn't the first one to be fouled by the weather this time of year. Still David, regale us with your tales of tricam fun.

Should we split up Tricamuary or reschedule it? Tricamuary in July? I'm game, these things are fun all year long. Plus the rules are random and don't matter, so lets change them if it makes it more fun.

In celebration of the last day of Tricamuary I put up a nice lil route this evening with a regular climbing partner. Today’s route was Main St. at Chickies Rock in PA. The route typically calls for a specific cam (.75) for the first piece, but with no great tricam placement possible I had to run it out a bit. Six tricams placed in total.

my phone camera isn’t very good, but there’s the general line.

My partner put up a route all with tricams earlier this season, on a line nearby called Sunday Morning. I think it was that one. also a fun route

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
