It's nobody's business how they got their van or whatever! If some climb got it given to them & didn't have to waste their time working the way I had to, I'm glad for them! I don't care how you got what you have all I & anybody should care about is if you are polite, nice, not in others way, & clean up after yourself. |

We don't give a fark how dirty or clean your van is, how much it cost and how you paid for it - the entitlement is that you think you can park/camp wherever you damn well please. The amazing thing is that with today’s demand, Mercedes is still the only manufacturer with a true 4x4 van. AWD Transit has no low range, and therefore does not count. Sorry about thread drift... |

Frank Steinwrote: true, but based on the potential "off road worthiness" of the 2 vehicles (severely limited due to their size, weight etc.) my guess is an AWD transit could go 98% of the places that a 4x4 sprinter could... |

curt86irocwrote: Don’t underestimate the utility of low range and 50/50 traction distribution. Also, the Transit comes with high mpg/capacity tires, which are just about useless off road. I imagine that ground and tire clearance would be an issue also. |

Nothing says outdoorsy poser like a rooftop tent. |

Matt Nwrote: What are you talking about? This is the age of identity politics. Issues that probably affect everyone in this thread, like finding camping near climbing, are irrelevant. It's all about what clique you belong to. What do you drive, what kind fo work do you do, what radio shows do you listen to on the way there. We want to feel part of a team and hate on another team. In the mean time, the practical stuff (like where to camp) can just keep getting shittier so long as I can feel cool for not having a van. (I still think the real problem is the NPS, the "illegal" campers are the inevitable reaction to poor management. But I'm in complete agreement with you that worrying about the price tag of the van is being a sucker.) |

Nothing wrong with having a van or something cool to camp in. Camping and climbing is fun. Not cool to camp illegally in the park. Regardless if they are climbers or not they are contributing to more and more land management restrictions that will affect all users. Hard to enforce parking and camping violations in a massive national park while being understaffed and underbudgeted. The NPS has been working on a new management plan. Consider how tight you want that noose. |

I suppose they could be ok for dirtbagging in situations where you can park within waking distance to climbs, but otherwise a huge hassle to setup and take down every time you need to drive. Most rooftop tents are bought as an expensive and impractical accessory to signal that the owner is a rugged outdoorsy type. Look what I drive to work! Goes along with the pristine high-lift jack mounted on the hood. (And don't forget the fuel tank mounted on the spare tire!) |

All I've learned from this thread is that my van is worth $200,000 (it keeps going up every time this thread happens)!! I'm looking forward to my 1,100% profit when I flip it. Do you think I can get $250,000 if I put a rooftop tent on it? |

it is so funny how polarizing rooftop tents are. You mention how overpriced they are and suddenly jeep owners are showing up at your house babbling about square footage and portability |
