I’m aware that it’s really not that hard, I’ve carried my gear up and down there many times. However, if you’re going up three times in 10 days it definitely seems like the more efficient option. I’ve stashed gear at many areas around the country and have never had any issues. I guess I had a little too much faith in my fellow climber to not be a total scum bag and take someone else’s shit. Lesson learned, I’m leaving Colorado lol.

Bye!

It’s potatoes, not corn. And to answer your question, most Californians apparently.

Almost. I said that stashing gear in a popular area is dumb. I have done dumb things and hopefully learned something. You caught me, and have earned a golden star. If it wasn't abundantly clear to you that I was admitting to a mistake, you might re-read the post.

I will take the gold star.

Sorry about your loss.  Hope you get it back.  I guess I'm old school.  I don't stash gear or anything else.  I hate to say it, but I'm not a very

trusting person.  Too many douche bags out there.

It's definitely disheartening to see the some of the responses here. It's pretty unreasonable to find an entire rack in a boulder field and think it's fair game to take. I understand the lnt principles, but leaving a few pieces of metal and plastic for a few days isn't going to destroy the environment. If you're really that gung-ho on it, at least try to get the gear back to the owner. Sure, if everyone and their dogs stashed gear for weeks at a time, it'd get out of hand. But would it really have much more of an effect other than being an eyesore?

I've cached things before, and I'll continue to do it. Certainly not for a week at a time. And obviously location matters a ton. The more people you have in an area, the more likely someone is gonna take your stuff. It's not Colorado's fault that is has one of the larger and more concentrated climbing populations. Ultimately, whenever you leave something behind, you're risking it being taken.

I dont agree with your view. Stashing gear is not ok, its rude. What happens when 100 people decide to stash their gear at your crag? You’d probably agree that’s not acceptable, so why should you get to stash yours instead of those other 99 people? I think taking it to the Ranger station is the correct thing to do, public lands are not your gear closet.

If gear is properly stashed, IMO, then no dirtbag or marmot should ever be the wiser. That’s what I go for when I’ve left some shit somewhere else and need to leave this shit where I’m at for now… but my hopes is that you find it. I’ve had lots of things stolen, it sucks, and it does make you want to lash out at society, which I’ve also done, but probably not helpful ultimately.

It’s hardly abstract, PACK IT IN PACK IT OUT is probably the most well known slogan of Leave No Trace. In addition, stashing gear is explicitly prohibited by the park service. What makes you deserved of special treatment?

This deserves to be repeated.

Pretty fucked up to get your gear stolen, let alone a bunch of pricks giving you shit. I hope you find it, and if not, that the robber hits the deck.

Yeah bro +1000; bunch a pricks giving him shit is way worse than some idiot splattering all over the talus like a bloody pancake.

Did you ask the park service if they have your rack?

Levi Goldman · · San Francisco · Joined Mar 2017 · Points: 10

Hope you get your gear back, but at least now you have an excuse to buy a double rack of totems/z4. I didn’t know stashing was an issue, we do it on El Cap but maybe we are not supposed to? I don’t know why anyone would take gear as how would they be comfortable using it… these days I don’t even keep booty…

Sorry to hear man, some people do suck. Dont let this group of whiners keep you from stashing, just hide it better next time!
