Thanks. I feel seen.

I don't think your subjugation metaphor holds up. I don't support this initiative because someone is forcing me. I support this initiative because I don't want to be an asshole. I'm willing to mildly inconvenience myself so other people can feel welcome and included. There's just no reason for a route like "N*ggers Leap" to keep its name. Change it to "Big Leap." And please don't come at me with that slippery slope fallacy.

Yes, let’s climb untitled by breaking everyone into identity groups and putting them against each other

For the people upset by this initiative, which of these words would you like to use in your hypothetic route names? I can't imagine any grown-up wanting their name attached to these.

I'm confused, I didn't see "racist" anywhere on that list, but that's the #1 most controversial route name at my area.

It’s just another example of leftists centralizing and consolidating power.

Climbing book publishers have sooooo much power? A niche sport with few offensive route names is a pretty bad way to consolidate power, especially giving an opportunity for the offending party to change their own route name.

I love the smoothbrained logic here.  Let’s see, some groups are specifically targeted or carved out with “funny” and derisive names, then when some in those groups push back, they are accused of being divisive and putting us all against each other by those now pouting and saying “can’t we all just get along” and be “United” -even though we hate all this “United”bullshit, cuz like we’d already all be United if the losers I insult would just play along...

I dgaf about the OP specifically. It’s just another example of leftists centralizing and consolidating power. Just like the BS disease and the masks. It’s about power and control, especially as it pertains to individuals here on the ground level enforcing edicts amongst one another. This is not about obscenity or vulgarity in route names. I don’t care for it myself but I don’t care about it either. I also don’t care about changing someone’s mind or derailing this post. I’m here to let my people (of all colors shapes sizes, diverse opinions, viewpoints etc) who oppose leftist tyranny know that we are here for you. Got yer back and we’re gonna STAND UP. Here on this page, the next one. in public, wherever. I straight up don’t care I’m down to die whenever- everyone I know is burying their relatives- that’s what they are planning their road trips for, not climbing. I buried my fking brother last year. He didn’t get a funeral I did a service by myself on a summit. Were here to fight- not to talk to leftists. Not to debate or tolerate; I’m here with my name-you all know who I am. Just here with a message to leftists because I know so many of you will see this; it’s on.

AAC publishes a list of racial slurs that are unacceptable in route names and this guy is like I AM READY TO DIE IN THE ANTI MASK FIGHT

For real people. This isnt culture war. Read the article. docs.google.com/spreadsheet… Which one of these words is in your route name?

The reality is that, statistically, almost NONE of us have or will put up new routes or publish guidebooks. This doesn't affect you. If you projected some mega route that contains slurs in the name, and it's since been redacted, that doesnt take away your send. If you put up a new route, and thats a big if, name it whatever the hell you want, but unless you're legitimate scum I don't see why you need to include any racial/homophobic slurs in it.

So for the most part that list of words seems totally uncontroversial to me.. However I noticed the word "sambo" on there, for me that word evokes a russian combat sport that incorporates wrestling judo and some kick boxing, I goggled it and got a bunch of pictures, descriptions and videos of people doing the thing that I associate with the word.

Am I missing something or do I just need a racister search engine?

No, you just need to scroll past the first google result.

Did some better looking into that, turns out I just needed a racister search engine.

Boy, did I call it or did I call it? Nice work culture warriors. And to the well thought-out opinions of Jay Crew, I'd just like to say, 'no u.'

But to ignore the noise and get back to the actual issue, it does seem like a bit of a mess. I can't blame the AAC for trying to take a 'leadership role' in this issue. But centralizing any set of route naming regulations, no matter how common sense, does seem like a crazy thing to try and do in the age of information freedom. Why are we, as a group of climbers, letting there be gatekeepers to climbing information anymore? Surely putting route information up on GitHub, and then letting various folks design interfaces for that data (and make some money of those interfaces) is more sensible? And if an interface wants to have naming 'rules,' implementing those would be easy enough.

Seems like this has the same solution as the thread where onX is trying to own route information. We need a public, open source location for route information.
