El Portal Morning Honker

If they’re still there when i come in 2 weeks.... i’m taking a massive dump on the hood of their car. |

What in god's name is that excuse for a rooftop carrier? |

Ryan Kellywrote: Definitely climbers - they own a bunch of Boulder pads. I camped beside them one weekend (can’t believe they have been camping there for weeks) not sure if they’re from Cali - they are a group with multiple cars. |

I didn't know there was a "campground" there! I thought that's just where the unimaginative bivied. Definitely not climbers, as evidenced by the bouldering pads....snxxxxxxxx But the tires... Maybe they're in biznass |

Brian Ketronwrote: I was trying to be nice and called them ‘climbers’ lol - and yes - bivy spot to spend the night. Kinda called it camping since I’ve seen people pitch tent at night there before. |

Well, the polite and neighborly thing to do would be to clean up their trash for them, and make sure it makes it’s way into a proper waste disposal dumpster. Everyone will appreciate the community service, and they will be reminded to maintain a tidy ship. If we don’t “Police” our own, there is a state agency that will do it for us... jus’ sayn!! |

These messages about cleaning up garbage at someone's OB campsite on NFS / CalTrans right-of-way / Privately Owned Commercial Property are even funnier than the junk show itself. "The Polite Thing To Do" is use a real campground or sleep in the boulders like a real climber. All you folks sleepin' on memory foam mattresses inside tin can replicas of suburbia on the side of the highway are so lost. |

It's already begun. These signs weren't posted (that I saw) a month or two ago (picture from last weekend) |

Salamanizer Skiwrote: Right.....let me take time out of my life, so I can clean up the trash and poop of 45+ highway bivy rigs. That's totally the right thing to do. I'll be quitting my old life tommorow morning, and get right on it. |

Brian Ketronwrote: The point is to either say something or do something about their mess (like throwing all their shit in the dumpster) to discourage that type of irresponsible nonsense. Or don’t, your choice. Not saying you have to be their personal janitor or pick up their poo. Just know that the alternative is “No overnight parking or camping” signs posted everywhere with someone more than willing to enforce it. I agree though, it’s more than likely already a lost cause and won’t be long before those signs pop up anyway. Shame we lost the willingness to police ourselves when it’s as simple as doing something, saying something or as easy as just leaving a note explaining why their being a douche. |

abandon moderation wrote: For what it's worth, it doesn't seem like it's still up at night time but it's hard to tell because I get there late and leave early when everything is stacked sardine tight with cars and for respect to the original intent of the thread. Whomever the honkers are, it's still happening most Sat mornings and last weekend it happened Fri night around 10:30pm or so. |

Let me be clear, I'm not the honker. Not my style. Last year, I contacted folks on this thread to discuss face to face. The person initially wanted to talk but they didn't show up. I'm happy to chat with anyone about the issue. |

Ryan Kellywrote: With the covid day use restrictions you can't have your car in the park after 11pm or before 5am. So sleeping in the boulders isn't really a thing until Nov 1st when the day use restrictions are lifted. As for camping, due to covid restrictions, all campgrounds in Tuolumne are closed and all but 1 (2 if you count the backpackers campground) campground in the valley are closed and the campgrounds outside the park are all full from reservations far far in advance. The walk ins are generally full by Thursday. One would assume that a "real climber" would know these things. |

Yeah, you are right Kevin DeWeese... In all honesty, I think the solution is a Yosemite Climber's Ranch. If there was a place in El Portal, Yosemite West, or somewhere else that charged an absolute minimum ($1 / night?) would people use it? |
|
|
I thought a Morning Honker was going to be about morning bathroom habits in the valley. Very disappointing thread. |
|
|
Just park in Fidelman’s driveway. |

The honker is a minor nuisance. Probably more of a bother to their own community in El Portal than to climbers. The skunk on the other hand... I woke up to an extremely strong skunk smell on Sunday night. My car still smells like it. Did someone get up to pee in the night and get sprayed? If so, my condolensces. |

Ryan Kellywrote: I would definitely use it. |

I'm not a honker either, but the morning honkers (not big boobs flashing you as they drive by) really could care less about climbers. They just don't want you trashing and pooping all over this place. It's not their issue. Easier for them to drive you away, and wait for the authorities to shut this down. It's an issue that NPS needs to address in relation to lack of camping options. The person that brings this up, and creates solutions with NPS or local entrepreneurs could be you. |

Buy a cassette toilet or a bucket with kitty litter and you're golden. There's a lot of us here in California. The state is beautiful; expect people will show up. Petition the government to have some public land set aside somewhere for everyone or deal with it. Learn to live with people or buy a secluded ranch for yourself. |
