New Subreddit For Texas Climbing Discussion/News

Seems us Texans have lost a place to convene and post news/vids/questions. I know we’re not the best rock climbing state but let’s pool our resources and make sure people at least know the opportunity we can provide: reddit.com/r/TexasClimbing/ |

I’m curious/confused... What was the “place to convene” that was lost? Reddit has a pretty slick nested commenting system, though. With how tangential online conversations tend to become, it seems to help organize and expand the dialogue a fair bit. Upvoting is addictive fun that feels productive, too, for better and worse. Also... WTF are you talking about, “[Texas] is not the best rock climbing state.”?!?! Hueco. Tanks. Reimers/ERock/Roger’s Park/Pace Bend/ Medicine Wall/Cub Cave/ etc etc etc. Team friggin Texas. Futuristic climbing gyms and a supportive community that lends truth to the state motto. world class bbq, texmex, tacos, and just about every other cuisine. An entirely reasonable cost of comfortable living with a vibrant employment market The Texas Math and Science Coaches Association. NASA and the JSC! Come On!!! A diverse, legendary, deeply rooted culture that has inspired some of the absolute best (and absolute worst) in film, music, literature, visual art, architecture, etc etc etc. More folksy talk than you can shake a stick at. One of the most fun and exciting F1 Grand Prix races in the season.

Hey Brent, awesome list! Fully agreed - never climbed another state. I’m mostly referring to multiple forums that have now grown stagnant. |

Ah cool, I see :) I’ve always wished Texas had it’s own MP sub-forum. It’s a BIG state, and, six flags be damned, it’s independent in spirit. Likewise, to all the content you posted in the subreddit! Have me wishing I could spend a day in Hico sometime soon. Depending on where you are in Texas, climbing in adjacent states/estados is also *very* worthwhile. |

Thanks for visiting the page! And yes, I think we should have our own Texas forum on here. Yeah, Wichita Mountains, Horseshoe Canyon, EPC - all on my bucket list. I’m just a Saturday climber pretty much nowadays so I’m trying to post things that I wish I would have known long ago. |

Anyone got a spare Erock reservation or open seats in their vehicle for this Saturday? |

Tom Shermanwrote: Tom, I think your chances of success will be drastically greater if you post up in the Texas partner finder forum :) https://www.mountainproject.com/forum/113683503/texas-partners |

Brent Kellywrote: Señor, you forget that one of those six flags was the Republic of Texas. You can't get more independent than that. I'm actually more offended that they put us in the Midwest. I figured it more Southwest given that El Paso is closer to San Diego than Houston. |

What respect do we have to gain to get our own Texas page? |

Tom Shermanwrote: Tom, the Austin Climbing Facebook group is pretty active as well. |

There has been a long simmering proposition that TX can secede from the US. Are you proposing Texans secede from MP? Get’r done |

Mike Swrote: I hear ya! But, I didn’t forget... I struggle to not interpret the “Republic of Texas” as a 9 year pursuit of annexation into the USA, made more difficult by the cultural acceptance of and reliance upon slavery in Texas at the time. So, while I love Texas and Texans, I can’t in good conscience hold up the flag of the Republic of Texas as emblematic of what Texas is all about - in much the same way I feel people misunderstand the meaning of “Come and Take It!”.... ....which is NOT “pry it from my cold dead hands!”.... "Come and take it" is the flag that Texans made to fly over the cannon they stole from the Mexican army in Gonzalez. Come and take it. Infer what you will. |

ddriverwrote: The Mexican army gave the cannon to the community of Gonzales to protect them from the Comanche raids. When things went south between the Mexicans and the Texans, the Mexicans wanted to take the cannon back. The "come and take it" flag was designed and made by some women of the community to tell the Mexican army to stuff it... no give backs. Also, it did infer "from our cold dead hands". They were trying to express "want some... come get some". The "come and take it" comment/stance has actually been used multiple times and goes back in history further than the Gonzales situation. |

Mike Swrote: Lolololol My saddle is made of ivory and it towers above the rest. It’s extremely uncomfortable. — So, what would happen if you said “come and take it”, and then the opposition backed down? Hunt them down and take the fight to them, even though they backed down? Or go back to business and avoid risking death for the sake of belligerence? I don’t disagree with y’all, not even about horses, and I’m not looking to be a history revisionist.... But I believe human nature, when well-fed and sheltered, is inherently amicable. So I’m always eager to push back against an interpretation of history that interprets aggressive belligerence as a form of nobility. Especially regarding the friendly nature of true Texans. “This country’s hard on people.”

Oh man I’m just now realizing Sheriff Ed Tom Bell’s “when’d he die?” might be indicative of his emoathy and fear asking —- hence why Ellis, who has already processed the horror of the Sheriff’s slow death, answers with historical framing of the year rather than the emotional truth of how painfully drawn out Bell’s final moments where.
