These are good stories. Communication is hard. i think the best thing to do, like Matthew Jaggers suggested, is to start the conversation by saying like "oh what are yall up to?" "this route looks fun" Or "what route is this" even if you already know, or "have you guys been climbing all day"? strike up the conversation first. this comes much more easily to some than others. then Id say something like " you know, that rope isnt really made for climbing, just so you know. that could be pretty dangerous actually" or "mind if I give you some tips on belaying"?

I know this is easier said than done. tone of voice goes a longggg way. we can be good instructors if we try!

I’m convinced that Church groups in Utah are the reason for group limits in slot canyons and disclaimers in guide books. Always a Scoutmaster/ Mormon leader who knows fuck-all and an assistant who knows even less leading fifteen kids into certain peril. 

I was in Smuggler's notch one time and this dude with a construction hard hat was rappelling off thin rope from ACE hardware threaded through the first bolt of a sport climb. I let him know it wasn't for climbing etc etc but he insisted it was "only practice". 

Remember that time a guy doxed another guy because he had pooped in a parking lot? That was a good one.

I have gently, tactfully suggested that a kid get an ice screw in because I didn’t want to see him deck from like 50ft, but I kinda like Cosmic’s idea of letting Darwinism run it’s course.
