Supertopo Climber Forum Conspiracy

Mountainproject orchestrated the demise of the supertopo climbers forum. |
|
MP also orchestrated your brand-new account. |

we are legion |

I don't know if REI rolls that way but the end result either way is a shame. MP will never have the heavy hitters that the taco had. at best 10% of the core checks in here. is what it is.. |

Has there been a "new" SuperTopo site that ever really got off the ground? FISH's site? SuperTaco? |

supertopo was the final holdout for old climbers, and it was memory holed to protect the fantasy that young climbers are the primary source of idiocy on the internet |

Marc801 C wrote: Thanks. Not a FB user (and have divested my FB holdings). Terribly unfortunate. SuperTopo was such a vast repository of legendary and semi-legendary climbers. ST had Royal Robbins (RIP) posting at one time, not to mention the dozens of other incredible climbers. Some of the folks who participated included Pat Ament, Steve Sutton, Largo, John Gill, Jim Donnini, Henry Barber, Scott Cosgrove (RIP), Randy Leavitt, Hugh Herr, John Stannard and the list goes on forever. |

Supertopo did not survive the Chris Mac Heresy. "Some may question your right to destroy ten billion voices. Those who understand realise that you have no right to let them live!" |

ST had the funniest person ever- Tami Knight! But that CMac dude let her be harassed constantly by some nobody |
|
ST forum seemed to have such a different character than MP. Perhaps not as much flaccid “trolling?” Heavy use of air quotes there. I thought Macs convo on Enormo was interesting. |

Ssssshhhhh but.........ST might be coming back....although in a neutered form. Lots of history there worth salvaging! |

Not gonna lie, I still miss Supertopo... so many legends, hilarious characters, incredible stories. Some post here too but no where close to the quality content you had there on a regular basis. I’m so bummed Supertopo scrubbed all of the photos from the threads too when they froze it, what a loss of climbing history. |

What's the non-PR-spun take on the demise of SuperTopo? I perused occasionally BITD, and liked that there were a ton of old-school contributors giving firsthand accounts, but became heavily non-participant in social media forums the last several years. As a result I'm out of the loop. |

CDub wrote: Allegedly, the taco was subject to many lawsuits over users posting copyrighted images without permission from the owners. CMac and his lackey friend decided it was easier to close up shop than contest the lawsuits. Personally, my belief is there is more to it. http://www.supertopo.com/climbers-forum/3198199/SuperTopo-Forum-to-shut-down-June-1-2019 At any rate, the taco was a great resource; glad it is still viewable for reference, but deleting all the images/photos is a crime against the people that took the time to post them. Last I heard, the taco facebook group is closed to new members, even those that were very active on the real taco. Maybe that has changed; I don't do facebook. Redpoint University tried to step up, but never really got the traction it needed. https://forums.redpointuniversity.com/ Hung on Fish's Widefetish for a bit, but the participants there just seem to want to be negative and abuse anyone they disagree with. Turned into a shit show of a slamfest with no real climbing content. Haven't gone there in months. |
