You can now flag a discriminatory name

Or maybe I just won’t post them at all. The upside in that is they can have an experience closer to mine in climbing stuff they can only guess about. At least until they post them up on MP. Then I’ll come along with pictures saying No, you weren’t the FA. Plus then they can have the joy of whatever names they chose getting nitpicked and corrected or deleted by the woke mob.

I think that if Mountain Project can rename our routes we should be able to delete them off Mountain Project.

Petition to rename Mountain Project as Supertopo-2-electric-boogaloo.

Still anxious to hear who the new partnership is with and if they’ll be willing to deal with the forums. From a strictly management perspective, it’s going to be a heck of a lot simpler to discontinue the MP forums than deal with this sort of divisiveness.

Are these being flagged by an overzealous algorithm?

I can’t wait until we start editing international routes too. We can start judging all the insensitive FA’s all over the world. We can rename all their routes and there is nothing they can do about it!!! We don’t have to learn about context or their culture because all that matters is that we are offended.

If folks don't like the decision they can make their own site... MP is privately owned and the admins can do anything they want with it. The consequence being that if folks don't like it they'll loose their use base.

IMHO all this gnashing and whining is kinda pathetic.

That’s true. If they want to be a site with factually wrong information that’s their right. Same with google maps. If they want to change half of the road names in the country they can do that. Everyone will quit using it because it would be horribly confusing and stupid, but technically they can do it. I do believe that we all should have power over our data and should be able to remove routes/comments/rating that we have added. The ticks people have on the route that have been removed should be changed to “removed 5.9” etc. Hopefully someone takes advantage of this opportunity and makes a competitive site that can advertise that it has accurate information.

Some names that were previously flagged have been removed. I wonder who decided what made the cut?

Cancel culture is Colin Kaepernick getting blacklisted from the NFL for kneeling to protest police brutality, or David Shor getting fired from his data science job for tweeting a study questioning the efficacy of violent protest. Someone flagging your racist route name is literally just speech. It might hurt your feelings, and maybe after a lot of rancor and debate get a route renamed, but that's it. (And if and when it elevates to more serious consequences, I'd oppose that.)

Curious who will make the final decision on if a route name is oppressive/denigrating to a group of people. Is it the group itself? Or Mountain Project leadership, which tends to be white and male? It seems more helpful to ask representatives of these groups rather than speculating and complaining about political correctness

Always amusing to read from folks, who instead of asking how logistically this would work, to remove obviously offensive names, but not get ridiculous, make it about culture wars and "woke" leftists. Everything filtered through an ideological bent and very little critical thinking or empathy.

The flagging is the first step towards reducing discrimination, the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex. I think that’s an ideology most people are okay with. Your google streets analogy is a straw man. We’re taking about discriminatory climbing route names. Nick said he’s not sure how it will work. He’s in the data gathering stage now. This is a step in the right direction and poo pooing it before it goes anywhere again is an indication of lack of empathy.

The ideological bent began with the starting of this flagging business.  And, I literally asked about the logistics in one of my previous posts, but no one ever responded/commented.  I know, lets rename the streets on google maps that we dont like so anyone using it will get lost once they get to the city where the streets have not been renamed.

How many discriminatory street names have you seen...?

I haven't seen any, but the crowd that favors renaming anything named after anyone who owned slaves probably begs to differ...

Just think of how many Washinton and Jefferson Streets there are out there...

Could we rename them to Obama-Ave?  Has a nice ring to it.

Nick Wilderwrote: Mountain Project will no longer tolerate names that are discriminatory in nature, including racism, sexism, homophobia, and other forms of bigotry.  We are committed to working towards being more inclusive, and one of our first steps is collecting discriminatory names.

Thanks, Nick, for taking this step. Thanks also for recognizing this as a first step. Like the removal of symbols of the Confederacy, the renaming of racist sports teams, or the dropping of racist brand names, the move to eliminate discriminatory route names is important. We should also keep these actions in perspective; they are symbolic. Some folks will certainly oppose these symbolic gestures, invoking the tired "slippery slope" metaphor and a lot of obfuscatory whataboutism. I hope you won't be deterred by their opposition. A symbolic gesture can be a good first step.

Even in the world of outdoor recreation, the threat to Black lives is real. Just this past weekend a Black man was attacked and beaten by drunken neo-Confederate white supremacists (content warning: violence, racism) while camping at a lake in Indiana with his white friends. Although representation is increasing, people of color have long felt unwelcome and unsafe in the outdoors. I'm thankful that Mountain Project has taken the step to remove bigoted language from its database. As Nick says, I hope this is a first step toward a more just and equitable world.

The next step, of course, will be to confront the more profound, consequential, and insidious ways that anti-Black racism and white supremacy have woven themselves throughout our culture. We have countless examples of the systemic marginalization, the callous objectification, and the relentless devaluation of Black lives. Our country is beginning to reckon with the manifestations of our racial hierarchy; we must also reckon with its causes.

The numerical list is gone as well, so it's harder to tell how many routes are on the list, and they abandoned the "new name / old name" list format.

Also, the grammar has taken a turn for the worse...

The list is still up but the link is gone from the flag.

Over 2000 routes now on the list.

"Manly Dike" in Josh should definitely be flagged. Surprised that no one has mentioned that one.
