You can now flag a discriminatory name
|
Mountain Project will no longer tolerate names that are discriminatory in nature, including racism, sexism, homophobia, and other forms of bigotry. We are committed to working towards being more inclusive, and one of our first steps is collecting discriminatory names. At this point in time, we have made it possible to flag discriminatory names. On any route or area page, you can flag the name as shown here in the "Improve This Page" link: Once flagged, users will see this message under the route title: The process of determining exactly what is discriminatory has not been finalized, but we want to start collecting data now. We have started working with some first ascensionists, many of whom are welcome to changes. There will be several other steps or actions to take regarding these names, but this is a complicated process that will take a bit more time, and this issue will have many updates in the next weeks and months. |

Can't wait to get the data on what people find offensive. |

It seems that the MP leadership team, which skews white and male, and which has tolerated these names for the ~20 years of the site's existence, might benefit from outside perspectives. |

As an aside from the main topic of whether Nick is selling the site soon, I would like to applaud the incidental revelation that there is now a mechanism to change dumb route names. |

YESSS. I AM SO THANKFUL! Thanks everyone |

Yep, I’m a privileged white guy that took too long to address this. But I’m working hard on it now, and will ask for guidance from many groups in this community. That’s one reason this will take time. |

John Anderson wrote: Nick, Wow so many assumptions! It's a harsh crowd for Nick from several posters already on page 1, and nobody has even gotten to the particular route names yet! I do not envy him right now. As someone who has submitted many routes to the database, both my own & others, I am curious about the process behind what happens when a route name is flagged. |

Many of these complaints are as eyeroll-inducing as you would imagine. I guess that happens when you solicit feedback from people who are on a mission to be offended. |

We’re gonna CHOP all these offensive routes right? |

Wow..... nothing wrong with being a “serial entrepreneur”. Heck that claim makes me admire Nick even more. |

Thanks, Nick. This is a great start and despite folks complaining that seemingly benign names are getting flagged, the number of horrendous names that I'm seeing on that list is eye-opening (and this is after a number of really heinous ones have been changed in the past few days). |

I doubt it's an algorithm. If the link is there for any one to click then effectively, anyone can, you know, click. Looks like someone went and reported a bunch of my own routes (bolded) by going to my profile on MP. I noticed that "Prowd," is also on the list (though not shown above), which is not my route, but one that I climbed and added to the database as well. My first reaction is that it's someone that wants to "own the libs" by trying to see what I will do when my own route names are flagged. If I look at it though, I can always try to see from another perspective: Direct Action and Resist! are both overtly political in their feature names. I'm fine with someone being offended that opposing political perspectives exist. Blood and Coin could possibly offend because it is close enough to "Blood and Soil" which was used by the Nazi's though I would hope that the overall theme of the route which is based upon quotes and references to Game of Thrones would negate that possible connection. It is the title though. Blue Collar could be presented as classist, though it was put up by three guys comparing it to their own blue collar jobs so there's that. But I'm always open to hearing and learning should there be an authentic argument. |

It is sad that this is the hill you chose to die on Nick... |

Anyone care to explain how “Superman” is offensive?Sure, Superman is a symbol of an omnipotent white man explicitly elevated by the power of his superior race. He's a self-appointed vigilante enforcer who never once intervened on behalf anyone other than other white people. |

Thank you Nick!! Good to see that MP is willing to be on the right side of history with this despite the inevitable pushback from half the community... |
