You can now flag a discriminatory name

A quick search shows 145 routes and 15 areas with the phrase "Great White" in it.
That seems like too many to be a coincidence.

Sharks are racist! Great Whites have white privilege!

I’m glad that there is an attempt to address this issue on MO in a more systematic way. But I think there should be some kind of a mechanism for filtering out all the trolls who will flag every route with “butterfly” in the name, to make a point.

At the very least, something like:

-a route that gets multiple tags from many people is a priority over a route with one tag
-a user who goes on to tag a bunch of random routes should face consequences for wasting the admin time.

Am I the only one that feels this is starting to encroach on Freedom of Speech? A developer  has the right to call the climb whatever the hell he wants. It’s up to MOUNTAIN PROJECT to decide if they will publish it. That’s on them. But to tell someone what they can or can not call something seems wrong. The developer runs the risk of not having his climb published online or in guides if the name’s offensive. That’s on him/her. I’m merely stepping back and looking at it from the point of our rights.  I see nothing wrong from asking a developer if they’d mind renaming their climb to something people will find less offensive. And if they say no - remove the climb if Mnt Proj feels that’s the right thing to do.

I am hoping the Admins recognize that this was proposed to them late LAST YEAR by an outside party, and it seems they sat on their ass about it until it was more trendy. I think this is a great feature to have, but recognize that people worked hard to get this very thing implemented and you wrote it off then. Big Thank you to the person who originally wanted this to be a MP feature. That person worked their ass off, only for the powers that be to reject it then and steal it now.

Looks like we need to get a history lesson and revert this area back to “Tu-Tok-A-Nu'-La”

I see this as an opportunity to onsight some routes that I previously tried and failed on...with different names.

I cannot wait until we get to do the same thing to MP user names, then movies, song lyrics, and dictionaries!
Soon, no one will be offended.

So fucking stupid.

I think this whole thing is lame virtue signaling, but I realize I have no say in it. Please consider leaving it be at hiding the name unless someone chooses to view it. Or, to be more specific, please don't create new names or force people to change them under penalty of removal.

And I have to add this: as a moderator of a once-lively climbing forum that has all but died, I see MP starting to make the same exact mistakes we did. Your database will survive, but the life of the site won't. But maybe that's the point. We mistakenly thought the same once.

The name of this route has been flagged as being potentially discriminatory

My suggestion would be to change terminology from discriminatory to objectionable which is more inclusive, and includes names that are discriminatory, racist, sexist, etc.

Nick Wilderwrote: Mountain Project will no longer tolerate names that are discriminatory in nature, including racism, sexism, homophobia, and other forms of bigotry.  We are committed to working towards being more inclusive, and one of our first steps is collecting discriminatory names.

At this point in time, we have made it possible to flag discriminatory names.  On any route or area page, you can flag the name as shown here in the "Improve This Page" link:

Once flagged, users will see this message under the route title:

The process of determining exactly what is discriminatory has not been finalized, but we want to start collecting data now. We have started working with some first ascensionists, many of whom are welcome to changes.  There will be several other steps or actions to take regarding these names, but this is a complicated process that will take a bit more time, and this issue will have many updates in the next weeks and months.

Thanks Nick for addressing the these kinds of names of routes others gave these routes in the first place. Good on you. Do you have ideas on how new names will be determined?

Unbelievable folks are hassling you about this....

He’s an alien, and a symbol of the failure of human ideals. Remember that David Carradine taught us (among lessons on autoerotic asphyxia) that Clark Kent represents his view of humanity in general; weak, self conscious, cowardly. Superman doesn’t like anyone, because we hate ourselves. Just, try and love yourself more.

Also, Superman is originally from Canada. Inherently offensive.

I don’t get why people are so whiny about this development. I mean, other than the obvious conclusion. Imagine if you were the butt of these stupid shit names, not just deprived of saying them to your friends and hurr hurring about it.

Yet it’s been free to use since before I joined, 15 years ago. It’s like you’re bemoaning the nature of the internet.

I’ve had good use of this site, I’ve contributed my “work” without regret.

If the site and society wants to get “woke” it’s probably about damn time. If somebody’s gripe is that a mere fraction of routes/areas won’t be referred by racist or offensive names, then you have to ask yourself why you like those particular names so much.

I’ve forgotten half of the names of routes I’ve climbed, who gives a fuck if the name is changed and the route remains? The strange thing is that the climbs that do stand out in my mind don’t have dumb shit names either. I guess dumb shits make so-so routes.

edit: hehe, they even weeded Anderson out of my quote just so people know I’m not tilting at windmills.

The site has changed ownership/management since last year.  And I don't think the "Admins" code up the site.

One issue here is that the definition of what is offensive (or objectionable) - or even egregiously offensive cannot be reached by consensus - only by power.
I bet we cannot even reach a consensus on what a 'consensus' is:  a majority?  plurality?  of all MP users?  of active MP users?  of locals? of the population that may be slighted by the name? of MP admins?  of a specially appointed blue ribbon panel?
Already we know that it will not be unanimous because somebody gave it that name in the first place - so it will be something short of 100%  How short is still worthy of a name change?
Not wanting to offend other people is a worthy and laudable goal.
But so is allowing others to have opinions and mores different from your own.
That balancing act has always existed.  It is an unwinnable war - someone will always be hurt & someone else will always feel that you trampled on their rights.
How about something similar to what Twitter (and every TV/movie/game forum has done with spoilers) and hide certain information with a warning: "Objectionable route name - click here to see"
If MP goes down this road of fixing everything improper route name, they will have little time for anything else and nobody will ever actually go climbing.
On the other hand, maybe that fits the real purpose of MP perfectly.....

Oh noez, panic! The slippery slope of social equity!

Where will it end?

When will “they” all be happy?

Will it be after things are - gulp! - equal?

Yep. They are going to have to change the name of that climb in the Needles called, White Punks on Dope!

MP was owned by REI then and appears to have been having employee issues (No one running the show?) so not a lot got done. For a while Admins had a hard time even having anybody authoritative to deal with when they had questions or problems to deal with. It has only recently back under Nicks ownership,
