You can now flag a discriminatory name

A quick search shows 145 routes and 15 areas with the phrase "Great White" in it. |

I’m glad that there is an attempt to address this issue on MO in a more systematic way. But I think there should be some kind of a mechanism for filtering out all the trolls who will flag every route with “butterfly” in the name, to make a point. |

Am I the only one that feels this is starting to encroach on Freedom of Speech? A developer has the right to call the climb whatever the hell he wants. It’s up to MOUNTAIN PROJECT to decide if they will publish it. That’s on them. But to tell someone what they can or can not call something seems wrong. The developer runs the risk of not having his climb published online or in guides if the name’s offensive. That’s on him/her. I’m merely stepping back and looking at it from the point of our rights. I see nothing wrong from asking a developer if they’d mind renaming their climb to something people will find less offensive. And if they say no - remove the climb if Mnt Proj feels that’s the right thing to do. |

I am hoping the Admins recognize that this was proposed to them late LAST YEAR by an outside party, and it seems they sat on their ass about it until it was more trendy. I think this is a great feature to have, but recognize that people worked hard to get this very thing implemented and you wrote it off then. Big Thank you to the person who originally wanted this to be a MP feature. That person worked their ass off, only for the powers that be to reject it then and steal it now. |

I see this as an opportunity to onsight some routes that I previously tried and failed on...with different names. |

I cannot wait until we get to do the same thing to MP user names, then movies, song lyrics, and dictionaries! |

|
So fucking stupid. |

I think this whole thing is lame virtue signaling, but I realize I have no say in it. Please consider leaving it be at hiding the name unless someone chooses to view it. Or, to be more specific, please don't create new names or force people to change them under penalty of removal. |

The name of this route has been flagged as being potentially discriminatory My suggestion would be to change terminology from discriminatory to objectionable which is more inclusive, and includes names that are discriminatory, racist, sexist, etc. The name of this route has been flagged as being objectionable |

Nick Wilderwrote: Mountain Project will no longer tolerate names that are discriminatory in nature, including racism, sexism, homophobia, and other forms of bigotry. We are committed to working towards being more inclusive, and one of our first steps is collecting discriminatory names. Thanks Nick for addressing the these kinds of names of routes others gave these routes in the first place. Good on you. Do you have ideas on how new names will be determined? Unbelievable folks are hassling you about this.... |

Cherokee Nuneswrote: Sure, Superman is a symbol of an omnipotent white man explicitly elevated by the power of his superior race. He's a self-appointed vigilante enforcer who never once intervened on behalf anyone other than other white people. He’s an alien, and a symbol of the failure of human ideals. Remember that David Carradine taught us (among lessons on autoerotic asphyxia) that Clark Kent represents his view of humanity in general; weak, self conscious, cowardly. Superman doesn’t like anyone, because we hate ourselves. Just, try and love yourself more. |

I don’t get why people are so whiny about this development. I mean, other than the obvious conclusion. Imagine if you were the butt of these stupid shit names, not just deprived of saying them to your friends and hurr hurring about it. |

Yet it’s been free to use since before I joined, 15 years ago. It’s like you’re bemoaning the nature of the internet. I’ve had good use of this site, I’ve contributed my “work” without regret. If the site and society wants to get “woke” it’s probably about damn time. If somebody’s gripe is that a mere fraction of routes/areas won’t be referred by racist or offensive names, then you have to ask yourself why you like those particular names so much. |

One issue here is that the definition of what is offensive (or objectionable) - or even egregiously offensive cannot be reached by consensus - only by power. |

Karl Kwrote:If MP goes down this road of fixing everything improper route name, they will have little time for anything else and nobody will ever actually go climbing. Oh noez, panic! The slippery slope of social equity! Where will it end? |
|

Yep. They are going to have to change the name of that climb in the Needles called, White Punks on Dope! |

MP was owned by REI then and appears to have been having employee issues (No one running the show?) so not a lot got done. For a while Admins had a hard time even having anybody authoritative to deal with when they had questions or problems to deal with. It has only recently back under Nicks ownership, |
