Idea: the Corona board

  • So first the problem:

I can't climb, everything is closed here in Washington and I hear they are ticketing for parking on forest land ect (closed)
I want to build a moon board but am a little too short on ceiling height and its expensive.
I do not want a spray wall cause I will get board with no friends in my house to set with and play.

So the solution:
Build a new standard board for everyone else in the same boat as me who's in?
The concept: a 8ft wide board at 40 degrees for a 9ft ceiling (I'll do the math for the design later) oh and like a 6in kick panel at the bottom
T bolts on a grid at 20cm spacing
So yeah that's basically a short moon board but here's the trick:
The holds.  Make all the holds out of 2x4s in a very repeatable way.  No fancy routing.  Maybe specific angles I have a table saw dont know how many others do as well.  Then post the layout for the holds online so anyone else can make there own Corona board for like $300

  1. 2x4s could be overlapped for jugs or incut a specified amount to vary the grip

We can all post problems online.  Heck maybe some nerd can even make an app.

Whose in?

The dimensions are obviously up for debate.

Ben Moon himself posted the top comment. He said that they're releasing a mini moonboard setup in the next few weeks that is basically exactly what you just described.

Interesting thanks for sharing

A couple things:
That mini moon board is only 8 feet of board and 6'7" tall I'd like to go bigger than that.  I can go from a foot to 8 feet of the ground in 1 move

Also the originals and all 3 wood sets is a lot of coin 1300+shipping

The mini Moonboard has been added to the website now and the building info is on it. Doesn't appear on the app yet though. Anyone have any other info?

If you're making everything out of 2x4s, just skip the tnuts and screw them in. Although the whole thing doesnt seem worth the effort to me, especially with how tall you are. You'll get bored pretty fast climbing "easy to make repeatable" 2x4s on such a small board.

Sounds awesome!

I am also interested in purchasing the moonboard mini but have some reservations since it does not seem to fully utilize the height in my room (a little less than 8 feet).  Also, because I live in Canada the cost of delivery for the moonboard mini seems to be ~1K$

Did you make any progress with the design of your corona board?

Thanks for sharing, Michael!  I ended up building a mini in a room we weren't really using now.  I live in Canada so wanted something indoors so I can use it in the coming winter (its coming :)
