Hi MP world. Is there any good free topo makers out there? The one I used back in the day I lost, and the hyperlinks for BetaCreator don't work.

Thanks in advance.

I guess I should mention it is for climbing routes not mapping. Or does Caltopo work for climbing routes? I opened it but it wasn't obvious that it would work for climbing routes.

Yeah that would be worth mentioning :-)

If by "topo" you mean "photo overlay" - drawing route lines and text on a photo, I use GIMP (on Windows), which is free.

Thanks for the responses guys. I miss BetaCreator. Man that was a slick program.

Happy Friday.

Inkscape is a free program similar to Adobe illustrator (as similar as you can get for a free program). I find it easier to use than GIMP.

I just tried downloading it from the link amarius posted and it downloaded fine. I can't run it because I don't have Adobe AIR installed but the actual betacreator download worked.

Inkscape is an awesome program, but BetaCreator has less of a learning curve and is likely perfect for what you want.

I found Betaflash to be very useful and easy to learn   sites.google.com/site/betaf…

I have used it a lot for standard paper topos, but it works quite well for photo overlays as well.

Hi, if that can be useful to anyone, I "fixed" the BetaCreator software to make it work in new browsers, locally: bohwaz.github.io/betacreator/

I'll second Inkscape.  It takes a bit to get a feel for, but it's great for letting you do any sort of sketching or drafting you can think up.  The only exceptions I can think of being things you should really use professional CAD software for.

Use TopoEditor. It is already used by major guidebook publishers as well as many individual climbers, who together have create thousands of high quality topos.

  • Quick, easy and free to use
  • Works in user's browser nothing processed or stored in the cloud
  • Creates topos which are interactive and can be viewed in any browser
  • Fully featured to produce guidebook quality topos.
  • Originator retains ownership.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
