Thanks for engaging me. Definitely not mormon--actually agnostic bordering on deist, former atheist and before that raised catholic. My attitude about alcohol comes from many different experiences. First I had (one is still a have, but soon to be had) two uncles that are alcoholics. My father got a DUI and stopped drinking when I was younger and always counseled me to not drink. During college I drank but found myself drawn to it in unhealthy ways (periodic binge drinking and having a couple almost every day) and decided it was better to stop completely before I reached some sort of rock bottom. Since I decided to quit drinking altogether and had to answer all the questions from friends about why, I learned a fair amount about the realities of alcohol (from peer reviewed studies/journals). I am always happy to talk about it. I do believe we are conditioned by society--hell, almost all societies do this--to use alcohol as this magical thing that enhances our lives, brings us together, etc. My personal experience is that I have more engaging conversations, climb much better--I was plateaued at V8 and did 3 v10's last fall and have stayed more injury free then ever.
I know I am probably not going to change one persons mind and I expect to be mocked for my stance since stats say roughly 85% of our population imbibes at least semi-regularly. But if one person stops drinking because of my posts on this topic it will have been worth it.
If it'lll make you feel better, sure. Maybe we could meet up in Truckee. Since your driving further, say the north side of I-80 rest stop and go bouldering out at Summit Lake--super classic problems out there in the V4 to V9 range. I'd be happy to show you around.
My fat ass can’t boulder V4-V9... I’ve done some V0-3 at Castle Rock. I would be up for some trad climbing. Winter’s coming do you ski or board? Got AT skis or a split board?
Drink, don't drink while climbing. Either way you can become a statistic. My grandfather drank until the day he died at 96. My grandmother until 98. FFS how long do you want to live? Are you waiting for the world to get better? Ain't happening.

Reality. What a concept.
I was, and still am a very, very moderate drinker. I can count on both hands how many beers I've had in the last year. Same with wine. With cannabis up until recently I was a doobie a day kind of smoker. Cannabis always seemed to focus me, especially when climbing. The only times I have ever got hurt while climbing was when I was straight and hadn't smoked a doob.
Might lose some weight if you cut out the alcohol--haha! I dropped 10 lbs in two months after I quit. I actually have both but haven't taken my Voile out for a few years but I would be up for trek up waterhouse peak this winter--hit me up.
A very good friend used to counsel me to get super drunk while bouldering. "If you can do it drunk while bouldering, just think how easy the moves while leading will be!!!" Like the song says... "It made good sense to me."
One of my best climbing partners is straight edge and doesn't partake in any drugs or alcohol. It's great cause I don't have to share my stash, but not so great when i forget and try to pass it to him anyways.
Please.. you kids these days. Next you’ll laugh because I say E and you say molly. To us old folks molly means stepped on 50X Ecstasy.
I thought molly was supposed to be pure mdma, whereas E was mdma mixed with meth? But I’ve never had the luck to try any of em. Just weed and mushrooms for me.

Yeah molly is the good stuff.
For my part, climbing is a motivation for drinking less. Drinking makes me lazy and weed makes me forgetful. I like to be on point when climbing.
From personal experience, climbing while cracked or coked out is essentially aid. That 5.13 you’ve been projecting is going to feel like a soft 5.9, you just gotta do a few ripper magoos.

There is a reason why September is the #1 birth month, followed by August, July, and October. And I think that's mostly just the liquor.
