What Not to do when Hiking in Zion National Park

I believe this ridicule comes from the outdated precariousness of trying to maintain or become the alpha male.  There, any show of “weakness” in one’s self is swept under the rug. While weakness shown by others - lo, even spraining one’s ankle and well telling the tale - is leveraged by the “alpha” via ridicule.

Most of the males here, after an activity of braiding pink ribbons in long blonde hair, would then choose as their next activity punching a punching bag instead of doing a brain teaser puzzle ... to try to make up for having done something stereotypically un-alpha.

You know who you are.  :)

FWIW, as I was telling the OP what a goober he was, I was also doing the New Yorker crossword puzzle.  Is that Alpha enough?

You have indeed redeemed your self a little.  But more so if you had first displayed here some stereotypically “non-alpha” behavior and then forthright posted a challenge to see who could complete the puzzle first.  :)

(It was a non-climbing thread from the beginning.)

Geez, you can do the New York...ah wait. I got NYT. Sorry. Still. Is the New Yorker still in print???

FWIW, and it's me, a wrinkled up old lady, so not much worth at all, I was impressed. Briefly.

In the alpha department though, I sprained my ankle while climbing, about five weeks ago. And kept climbing. And then took a flying/driving five day climbing trip. And climbed.

So there.

Of course, I have to shave a few whiskers these days. There's that. Sigh.

Best, Helen

I was watching this while bored in a meeting. Then realized the video was more boring than my meeting.....

Shawn has been logged in since (presumably to see how this is going) but hasn't deigned to respond.

Probably crutching around Home Depot now grabbing some supplies for an upcoming railroad trestle rappel video.

This is actually a good post - he broke one of the cardinal rules of canyoneering - NEVER jump into a pool of water with questionable depth. NEVER. Its in almost every canyoneering book and when you get your Narrows permit (or Subway permit, etc) the rangers  make a big deal about this mistake. Sprained/broken ankles from jumping into pools is one of the most common causes of injury in Zion. Anyways, thanks for posting - its always good to hear about other people's accidents so we don't make the same mistake (despite the negative feedback your getting).

Perhaps.  :)

Actually, it's that graduated post-rate that severely restricts new members ... even on their own threads.   Bleh.

Hey Bill, do you also feel sorry for and buy from telemarketers? This guy posted a lame hiking video in a climbing forum for Youtube "hits". Its spam.

Yeah, NYT is too much for me usually.  New Yorker is still in print and has amazing crosswords!

Even those are totally unreliable in slot canyons.

Actually, it is - it's just that it's about the easiest non-technical canyon around (in those water conditions).

What drove me nuts was the constant mispronunciation of "Zion".

Ponder this: Would the video have been post worthy had he not broke his ankle?

Nah.  For me, that would be like comparing apples to go carts.  And, anyways, no feeling sorry or buying here.

Closer to home might be assuming that my enjoyment comes from good memories of having done that shown rap out of Mystery Canyon into the Narrows ... but still not the whole picture of my view on it.

"...Severe grade 3 ankle sprain..." but I'll name the video how I broke my ankle...

Thank you all for your constructive comments! I have found this most amusing. I think I'll try and clear up a couple things, then you may commence with your lampooning.

1. All footage was taken prior to the injury, we did not film anything after. (just edited it that way).
2. I realize I made a horrible mistake, but since I was up and down the area three times, I thought the ground felt even and safe. Dumb. Yes. I wish I took it slow. But way to kick a guy when he's down everyone. Does it make you feel better about yourselves? Kind of sad.
3. The title is 'broke' with quotations. My ankle is pretty destroyed and definitely doesn't work so one could argue it is 'broken' but no not fractured. ("How I got a grade 3 ankle sprain..." didn't have the same ring to it).
4. There was several miscellaneous posts, some hiking posts in the southern Utah forum, so this didn't feel very off topic to me as a few suggested. So sorry I forced anyone into watching "I didn't wanna clock work orange ya." Hope you recover soon.

PS You guys and gals seem very strong and wise and awesome. Don't ever change.

Huh? On the first page of that 63 page sub-forum, there is exactly one sorta hiking post.

Obsessed with saying MILLENNIAL wrote: 2.  What is your target audience?  Honestly, who would watch someone else walking in ankle deep water in a nondescript dusty canyon for 11+ minutes, and exclaim "man.  I enjoyed that."  And who is the riveting narration for?
People like me. :)
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
