Everyone on FB has an identity, and you can see a face if they added one to their profile. To think that everyone on FB uses their real name/identity and photo is wildly delusional.

You are not saying the truth that you have seen worse on FB. If what you said was true, I’d have experienced that.

Speaking of delusional.

There’s only one way to eradicate the nastiness on MP, it’s if they no longer allow the cowards to hide behind a screen name. Based on my yrs of experience discussing very controversial topics on groups where everyone had a name and a face, I’m sure if MP would do that, things here would get much better.

There's good research about social media that shows this simply is not true.

On the discussion groups that I have participated, I have never heard the word “troll” before. I only have heard this word after I started using this site.

Odd - it's been in use for 30-ish years on the net, and longer before that.

From the Wiki entry for "internet troll":

There are competing theories of where and when "troll" was first used in Internet slang, with numerous unattested accounts of BBS and UseNet origins in the early 1980s or before.
The English noun "troll" in the standard sense of ugly dwarf or giant dates to 1610 and comes from the Old Norse word "troll" meaning giant or demon.[18] The word evokes the trolls of Scandinavian folklore and children's tales: antisocial, quarrelsome and slow-witted creatures which make life difficult for travellers.[19][20]
In modern English usage, "trolling" may describe the fishing technique of slowly dragging a lure or baited hook from a moving boat,[21] whereas trawling describes the generally commercial act of dragging a fishing net. Early non-Internet slang use of "trolling" can be found in the military: by 1972 the term "trolling for MiGs" was documented in use by US Navy pilots in Vietnam. It referred to use of "...decoys, with the mission of drawing...fire away..."[22]
The contemporary use of the term is said to have appeared on the Internet in the late 1980s,[23][24] but the earliest known attestation according to the Oxford English Dictionary is in 1992.[25][26][27]
The context of the quote cited in the Oxford English Dictionary[26] sets the origin in Usenet in the early 1990s as in the phrase "trolling for newbies", as used in alt.folklore.urban (AFU).[28][29] Commonly, what is meant is a relatively gentle inside joke by veteran users, presenting questions or topics that had been so overdone that only a new user would respond to them earnestly. For example, a veteran of the group might make a post on the common misconception that glass flows over time. Long-time readers would both recognize the poster's name and know that the topic had been discussed repeatedly, but new subscribers to the group would not realize, and would thus respond. These types of trolls served as a practice to identify group insiders. This definition of trolling, considerably narrower than the modern understanding of the term, was considered a positive contribution.[28][30]

The reason things on MP get so nasty is because people here can be cowards hiding behind a screen name. On FB everyone uses their real identity and you can see their face.

Most of my online debates were very heated discussions, and most people did keep things civilized. You are not saying the truth that you have seen worse on FB. If what you said was true, I’d have experienced that.

On last International Women’s Day, I wrote my first slam poem called,”Dear Modern Women”. Before I posted on a group, I sent it to my best friend in Brazil and asked her if she thought I sounded judgmental because that was not what I was trying to accomplish. She replied that my poem was a slap on the face but also  uplifting. I posted on a group, and for my surprise,  I only got one comment. Only one lady replied saying my poem was a piece of garbage. I have talked about the things I wrote on my poem numerous times and the discussion was heated and very lengthy, but when I translated all that in form of poetry, I only got one insulting comment.
Nobody dared to say anything about my poem because everyone there had a face and a name.

There’s only one way to eradicate the nastiness on MP, it’s if they no longer allow the cowards to hide behind a screen name. Based on my yrs of experience discussing very controversial topics on groups where everyone had a name and a face, I’m sure if MP would do that, things here would get much better. I will actually message them suggesting that.
But whatever, I have never participated on any internet groups with a screen name and never will. I’m not a coward. I stand behind every word I have said behind the screen and everywhere.

On the discussion groups that I have participated, I have never heard the word “troll” before. I only have heard this word after I started using this site.
It could be because nobody there was really trolling. You guys here use this word all the time. It’s because there’s a lot of trolling here, but on groups where people have a name and a face, there isn’t, and I can testify that.

One of my top favorites discussions was the one I started on Dr. Richard Pan FB page. I knew what I was getting myself into and was prepared. I came up with a few evidences from reliable sources  to back up all my claims.

I wish MP would tell members everyone must use their real name and have a clear picture of the face. Wouldn’t that be great?

Anyway, I’m going to have to excuse myself because I have a placement test to study, kids to feed, work, house to clean, and a big climb to get ready for. And also a big concert to go right after my big climb where I will be meeting the members of Disturbed, the band which has been writing the soundtrack of my climbing career.

As for people’s opinion on my style of writing, you are entitled to your opinion. Whether people love it or hate it, I could care less.

Hilarious the dude here who mentioned that I misspelled lawyer. Many Americans have told me I write much better than many Americans.
I can imagine the super nasty things you guys would write if my English was bad. Sorry, but you guys will have to look for other things to mock me, not my English.

Aight... so you're the authority on the internet and I am lying but you have never heard the word troll before? Brenna how about you stop insulting people and accept that you are not the smartest, most knowledgeable person in the room? Every conversation you are in you suggest some thought which is fine, but then you proceed to yell and rant at anyone who doesn't agree with you. Calling me a liar is insulting, calling people idiots is insulting. I get that you feel bullied but last I checked I haven't bullied you, I have disagreed with you, there is a difference.

Mountain project isn't a social media platform. I already use my name, but I want a rock climbing photo, not a picture of my fucking face.

What do you even want out of mountain project? The one actually climbing related question you asked, you ignored everybody telling you the truth. So...

I call troll.

Erm, net discussion forums were the original social media platform.

I still think digging through someone’s online identity outside of MP for dirt - in this case the antivax thing - is poor form.  That being said, my differences with someone who fanatically believes such a thing are irreconcilable; I refuse to look for common ground with creationists too and choose to disengage.

Perhaps everyone needs to agree to disagree and move on - no opinions will be changed and the sniping does nothing but threaten our forum access.  Which, coincidentally, we have no rights to.  If any of you cared this deeply about the antivaxxers you’d be elsewhere online arguing your case.

Social media is the intellectual property of the public. If you don't what people to know what you think about moon landings or who shot Biggie and Pac then don't post it to social media. Pretty much if its on the internet it's fair game. Just like my sex tape baby!

If I remember correctly, she actually asked people to look her up for the purpose of proving she was real or something like that. Naturally, that was the first thing that popped up and a lot of people ran with it.

Sure but we’re all REI’s guests here; my point being that the bickering serves no purpose and risks our access.

I cant help the feeling of being bullied BY Brena... and i havnt even engaged with her.

I feel as if I've been silenced.  Is MP now a god damn safe space? Where anyone who feels marginalized gets to puff out their chest and pretend to be protected and IMMUNE to discourse, criticism and god forbid a conflicting view
You dont get to just call bullying on anyone who disagrees with you.
Who are you with the name calling, repetitive insertion of your political and social views into every comment when they have no longer been discussed. And when are... its because you keep repeatedly stating them! Give it a rest already.

And no one asked about your dr. Jerk nuts discussion, your favebook arguments or about your poem, or your lawyers non medical opinion. Or your project... or your kids...
all irrelevant spray..... quit sprayin bro

Hello Amber,

Could you please delete my profile again?
I have been reading about the psychology of being mean in the internet, and those people will never stop. COClimber posted that he may stop.
I read that being mean in the internet gives people a temporary high. The number of people coming after me is growing. Those people have been giving me a hard time since my very first entrance on that forum. They’ve been mean to me since day one. They will never stop. It’s not fun being part of MP.

Please, delete my profile, and no worries about me coming back and then asking you to delete it again. I have no desire to be part of an online community where people are beyond nasty.

I have been in many groups for many years talking about very controversial topics with people who were very passionate about their beliefs. The topics were: abortion, feminism, the current role of the modern women in the health of society, farm animals welfare/ factory farming, civil war in my country, medical freedom, and I have never ever absolutely never experienced anything remotely close to what I have been experiencing on MP.

MP anonymity has been hurting the purpose of this group. Trust me, people don’t have the courage to be mean and nasty when everyone who is reading their comment knows their real name and can see their face. The groups I have participated in heated discussions were on FB, and everyone there came with a name and a face, keeping the discussion civilized no matter how heated things got.
You don’t need to delete the thread. Only if you want to.
BTW, I have never thanked MP for deleting a thread that someone did just to mock me. I have never seen this thread. Apparently, the thread was deleted shortly. Thanks for doing that.

I appreciate you guys trying to help the situation, but they will never stop being mean to me, and I’ve grown tired of it.

Thanks,

Brena Guerra

Bloody hell, you do know that you can just... log off, right? No need to flounce or ask anyone to delete anything. You're free to go away and enjoy life on whatever forum or social media you want. Your way of approaching things just screams attention-seeking.

And another thing: anonymity? I've only been here a couple of days, but one of the things that I did notice is that the vast majority of users have a real-sounding name (of course I have no idea if that's they're actual name or not), as well as a profile picture. I've never seen this on any other forum, apart from maybe Facebook (which you seem to love so much).

My advice, as someone who doesn't know your past on the forum and have no axe to grind, would be to log off and go for a walk - maybe you'll even gain some perspective and see that being called an idiot on a forum is not something to be crying about.

I was reading the psychology behind being mean online, and apparently it’s addictive. People get a certain “high” when they are mean to people in the internet. You guys, with the exception of a few, have been giving me a hard time since my very first entrance here. You guys have been mean with me since day one. I didn’t call any of you an idiot for no reason at all.
If you guys are getting some pleasure in putting me down then this will just get worse. I will never win with you guys. And the number of people coming after me keeps growing...Have never ever absolutely never experienced anything remotely close to this. This has to be fruit of the anonymity of MP. I have participated in heated discussions where people were passionate about their beliefs, and nothing like this has ever happened. And the topics were serious topics. Then I come to a climbing website to ask how gear should be shared and just look at what this has turned into. You guys are very mean. MP anonymity gives you power to be mean. I’m sure if real identity and picture were required, this online community wouldn’t be this nasty.
Fine, you guys are all better than me. I’m not worthy to be part of this such wonderful climbing forum. I came here to ask a dumb question and society is a much dangerous place because I’m spreading diseases and I’m a total loser for admiring Vanessa O’Brien.I get it...

You clearly are getting your own emotional rush out of this. You keep coming back and stoking the fire. If you find yourself continually engaging in contentious interactions, look inward.

11/10 pure mastery, I mean even Devin and Kyle had at least 1 person coming to their defense. One of those people took a swan dive off the flat irons and wants to fight everyone and the other was busted for not wearing a seatbelt. The bar has been set pretty damn low and if someone still cant clear it maybe it's time to look at what all these arguments have in common. Hint: dont look too far

I had breakfast with my friend this morning in Tuolumne and lament the fact that this man who is so knowledgeable and kind, with climbing experience all over the world and through every discipline is going downhill fast and has a hard time making a 2 mile hike with me. Meanwhile, the climbing world is now filled with people like you.

I’m not sure who i find more annoying right now, some know nothing like you who thinks the greatest alpine climber is somebody who hires third world climbers to do their leg work, or Fan Yang who sprays about how easy 5.12 is in a dead man’s thread. Future Constine in the makin there.

It’s a shame I’m an old gimp and only half my body is working. As I limped off a beautiful California mountain just hours ago by myself and now about to sleep on the side of a road in a pile of quivering mess, I will sleep soundly knowing I’m still better than you.

Lol I know who you are, and you damn sure ain't from Colorado!!!! Hell you haven't even climbed there before!!!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
