When Soloing Goes Bad

this thread is why MP sucks..

That’s pretty lame to say don’t do anything dangerous in front of other people. Countless people witness car accidents so with this theory nobody should drive cars because the accidents will haunt people. Lame.

Surely falling and dying yourself is far worse than having someone do it near you.  If someone finds soloing rewarding enough to risk their own life for, I'm not going to be the one who says "your fun may be worth losing your life over, but please don't do it in a way that might my life, albeit to a much lesser degree".

Sad, rainy day here in Portland. =-(

Soloing at or near your limit is a whole different game that very few play and your argument might apply to those people. the vast majority of soloists are on stuff they have wired that is completely in their comfort zone.  by your pathetic argument just because other people happen to be using the cliff I can't climb today.  maybe you should take up knitting....  I hear its pretty safe until you lose an eye...

When knitting goes bad.  Even crazier that some people choose to knit without yarn.

The story of how kombucha was invented......

Somewhere in China, around the turn of the first century......translated from Chinese.

"Dude, you want some tea?"

"Uhhh.....that tea is bad dude."

"No it's good....try some."

With all due respect you misunderstood the nuance of the argument I made. Without going into exhaustive detail, I implied that there is a responsibility with soloing that goes beyond the glorification and hero worship of it. It's about thinking of how your actions may affect other people. And the false analogy with the cars? Really? That's like saying no one should eat in public because someone may choke on their food- it's a ridiculous counter argument. Please don't lower the important point I made to the baseness of a bad analogy.

Oh for sure. If you solo for glory you are an idiot. I solo because it’s fun and generally nobody ever knows unless I tell a friend where I’m going for safety reasons. So I agree. Same thing goes for BASE jumping, if you’re doing it for YouTube glory you are going to die/get hurt all just to please others. Not the way to live. It’s all got to be worth it for yourself.

I see what you did there..... ;)

If you don't get more thumbs up it may be too cerebral for MP.......

On a side note, the knitting needle in that cat may NOT have been and accident, but actually knitting rage. It happens........when trying to knit around cats and yarn

How is soloing any different then skydiving, surfing, base jumping with a squirrel suit or even racing in nascar?? We all do crazy things as humans and yes people will witness things they don.t want to :o but that is part of living on this planet. Some s*#t is inevitable..

Is it the same guy making all of the threads about this kid?  In the past week we've had his gofundme, this article (twice?), the original post (that I think was deleted?), and then one called "another kyle thread".  if even thread titles acknowledge how much coverage he has gotten for himself, we might have reached maximum Kyle.

Kyle on the other hand, based on the report, his admissions and further discussion fits your description of hubris and quite nicely.

But, I still would not regulate personal behavior whether its novice or pro-soloing its up to them to make the call whether to go or not go. As long as they are not breaking any laws I am good. Please recognize debates like this one get us closer to a reasonable middle, so folks like me who agree to push anytime, anywhere, and folks like you, who would prefer we exercise our human privilege in private, are not troubled too much by what we prefer.

Mark my words: as soon as a solorist falls and takes out someone at the base, soling will be banned on public land.

Even the psychological impact of witnessing a death is real.  To potentially submit others to your inherently selfish act is selfish at best.

But that's basically what climbing is all about!!! 100 percent selfish. It's a stupid activity that only benefits me! It's also one that causes mega grief because of one simple mistake, a momentary lapse of judgement, or it just went bad. Saying any differently is foolish!

Edgy? More like just dumb humor but I do think it's funny when people say "don't say stuff that's been said before", bc then prob no one would talk much. I'm 46, I wish I could wear skinny jeans (bc I'm old and don't want to be) and I've never had that drink but I think it sounds pretty gross.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
