I've run into plenty of "famous" people, but there isn't a fiber in me that requires me to boost myself in some kind of odd way by mentioning it. If you want an extreme version of this sad trend, check out our buddy Medusa. Holy crap that guy is the king of selfies with B and C listers. Be secure in yourself, know that you matter and are whole on your own without expensive possessions, notable acquaintances or friends, etc.
This often develops naturally in a person as they mature and get older, but jeez...some of you goofballs are old enough to be my dad.
2/10 for sure. I just figured it was because you had had sex with every famous climber you've ever met and were exceptionally good at following the rules clearly laid out by the OP title...

It's SOLID

I think you're having trouble with the difference between being trolled and being simply called out for being ridiculous. It's a very clear distinction, if you're sharp.

We are sheeple, you are woke!! God forbid someone give two fucks about top performers in a hobby they are interested in. If you always loved basketball would you be ashamed to met Michael Jordan? If Forest Gump was your favorite movie, and brought you joy, would you be embarrsssed to tell Tom Hanks you loved the film? Are you too petty and insecure to appreciate someone else's accomplishments? Rather compensate with a holier than thou attitude of shaming individuals who acknowledge people who have done extraordinary tasks?
It's funny/sad, but it's also not as serious as you make it. Welcome to America where celebrities are worshipped!

It's funny/sad, but it's also not as serious as you make it. Welcome to America where celebrities are worshipped! You don't get it, but that's likely because you're part of the hilariously sad phenomenon. Nothing wrong with "giving f*cks" about top performers in a hobby you're interested in, or telling an actor you liked his film.
You know good and well it's not about appreciating someone else's accomplishments, but that was a cute suggestion.
Casually (or not) bringing a much more successful person(s) than yourself into the conversation, to further or otherwise improve your perceived position relative to your current surroundings, is much different than some of the innocent behaviors you're describing.
We all know what it is. We all recognize it, even if we do ourselves do it (and that's why y'all is mad!) It's like porn - you know it when you see it/drop it.
Just own that you get a little chubby when you say "Alex Honnold told me" or "I saw Jimy Chin eating protein powder in the parking lot of my dentist" and move on. There are worst things to be guilty of, right? Especially if you're from LA ;)
EDIT: Just saw your add above, Russ. Point well taken.

Let's see what else I can find around here... If I had time, I'd get out my slides, I guess.

Guy thought is was a good idea to have the oysters at the local buffet, 1500mi from the damn ocean, lol! And you.might know the answer to this question: Is Wayne Bob still alive?

These "who have you climbed with that's famous?" threads are always funny, because in our celebrity-obsessed culture, we think it's actually a big deal to see, meet, talk with, and maybe even climb with elite/famous climbers. In reality, this sport is still so small that if you climb for more than a couple years you're going to run into someone who is sponsored, IG famous, and/or in magazines.

I think the better question is, what famous climber could you take in a fight? There’s only one wrong answer, and it’s John Long.
EDIT: crap, forgot about Scarpelli! V V V

If I read it this correctly - running across you at a crag that was below your warmup level was statistics, and not serendipity?

Reality is that if you've been around climbing long enough, especially from before the sport blew up and the community was still small, you probably met and climbed with many established figures of the community. It would be strange if you did not.

Wayne Bob? Hmmm... dunno.
But last I heard Rolo Garibotti was still doing OK (drops another name). Here he is following the NW corner of the Bastille:
I'd make a joke and post some pictures of Hank Caylor, but he's more famous for something else, and besides: Hank knows everybody's sister
