Auburn Quarry Raptor Nesting Closures

In the Bay Area Rock Climbing book by Thornburg it is noted that parts of Auburn Quarry close for Raptor Nesting.  I know there is a sign there, but can't find any dates anywhere else about this "closure" and I've talked to tons of people that have climbed in the closed areas recently.  So- is there actually a closure still?

I didn’t see any notice last time I went a few weeks ago. I am sure they post it at the trailhead and at the crag. There’s a message board in front of the memorial crag.

Last time it was announced I think it was just the twin towers area closed.

Last years notice had basically everything upward of Horseshoe Canyon closed. I just don’t wanna be the asshole that violates the closure and messes things up for everyone

Closure is on, read link for details. Also, it’s probably gonna be way too hot to really enjoy climbing there soon anyway.

"The Upper Quarry at Cave Valley/Auburn Quarry is now open for climbing! The falcons have fled and were successful in raising 3 chicks for the first time we know of in the Cave Valley Area!"

That's cool, but conditions look atrocious.

I've climbed at Auburn Quarry during all four of its climbing seasons!

  1. The hand blistering one.
  2. The muddy one.
  3. The one where jams numb your fingers.
  4. THe other muddy one.

So, you choose choss?

I’m torn between defending the area and not really giving enough of a shit.

NO no no! It's a terrible place! Snakes! Big MEAN POISONOUS snakes, and an all day slog through manzanita and poison oak to get to the choss. And if it's not raining it's too hot, and besides the terrible conditions, it's....always covered in ants. Big MEAN BITING ants.

SO best just to stay away, go to Tahoe, it's waymobetta!

I wish I could like all of these posts with a single click.

I don't get the appeal of this place. From the Bay it is no closer than Table Mtn or The Bear/Bubble once you factor in the approach and the rockfall/choss factor is awful.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
