No one wears shorts just look at the Euro's who crush.

Seriously though shorts are the way to go, with care you can even wear shorts for knee locks.

I accidentally packed my climbing rope in a bag with my shorts. I realized my error and unpacked as soon as I got home. I can't see any damage on the rope. Is it still safe?  Should I call Petzl about this? A friend told me there could be invisible damage, so now I'm afraid to climb on it.

Besides the battery acid Frank is rightfully concerned about, the safety of your rope also depends on what the shorts were washed in.

My legs are pretty hairy, so pants all the way.

Me and (apparently) Lynn Hill have been climbing in shorts for years.

I sure hope we (me and Lynn Hill) haven't been doing it wrong all this time....... ;)

You can put a harness on over boxer shorts. Brad Gobright's done it. Why stop there? Slip the harness on over your birthday suit! Not something I've done, and i don't condone it (with myself in mind).

Zip offs best of both worlds

I personally think you can't go wrong with thin nylon pants that you can just roll up if it gets THAT hot.  I like the long pant legs for wind, sun, shrub and rock protection most of the time.

Yes, I do all the time in the summer.  But I also always wear a pull on elastic knee covering as well. This provides a lot more protection for knee scrapes than the fabric of a pant does. Best of both worlds.

Pants are a bomber piece of gear.

Never underestimate the power of style.

Edit to add: The climb is Dopey Duck, a three pitch 5.9 at Shortoff in Linville Gorge, NC https://www.mountainproject.com/route/105969252/dopey-duck

I did yesterday. I think I lost more blood wading through sage brush than to the climbing.

Pants are like tape: as your technique gets better, you need them less and less, but at certain areas, you may still always need them.
