Music at the Crag

Every braj should respect the local scene.  For example I accept that Shelf Road is overrun with deep-bass douche bags and their howling bro-dawgs. Cool, I guess.  But if you bring your fanny pack bullshit to Eldo, Lumpy, or you name the place.......I'll crush your shit. And then kindly tell you about ethics.

EDIT:  after finally reading all responses, there is clearly some similarity between shelf road climbers and residents of arkansas.

So what's the verdict here?  It's ok to play music as long as your box goes to 11?

Why don't we just make 10 louder?

I love having music playing for just about any activity I'm doing including climbing.  That said, I know not everyone else does, and more specifically not everyone wants to hear MY music.  So if I'm isolated, if I know for sure I won't disturb someone else, I'll toss my phone in my chalkbag pocket with some tunes lightly playing.  If anyone is around that I could disturb I either go with no music, or pop in a single earbud.

I think it's important to be mindful of the impact you can have on other's enjoyment and do everything you can to minimize that impact.

Personally, I like music at the crag (as long as it's Taylor Swift).  It helps drown out the noise of the fucking crag dogs, and crag babies...

It's kind of a fine balance.  Like when it's too hot for a shirt, but too cold not to wear a beanie...

As long as I like the music AND it isn't impeding on belayer/climber communication I can tolerate it ;-)

Beanies are PPE, I'm not seeing the issue. You should be wearing one at all times when there's the possibility of landing on or near a crash pad.

Music whenever is good and should be decided by who is the best climber. Beats listening to idiot climbers spewing beta about the warmup, plus this gives some motivation for the chiffnughets to improve. You don’t like my music, get a labotomy, all problems solved.

I suppose it could, but an earbud will block your hearing to some degree without any music. Thank you for your opinion, I'm just looking to see what others think. What do you think about a boulder field where communication is not as important?

Yes but then only blocks your hearing and not everyone else's....  For bouldering, I guess the argument about communication doesn't really hold water, but the whole generally being considerate of other people thing still does...  but don't worry your not alone in that, music is probably at least 3rd on the list of inconsiderate things other climbers do after dogs and babies...

This is a great thread.  Really diving into some hard hitting issues here.  I'm sure the hearts and minds of many are being swayed.  It has got me thinking though... Which group is more entitled at the crag, dog owners, parents, smokers, guided parties / outing clubs, Millennials with Bluetooth speakers, or anyone from Boulder?

Im pretty sure the smoking parents of music listening guide dogs get the priority.

But only if they're from Boulder.

What do you all think about music at the crag? It seems some people get really mad about it. I honestly like it when people have their music playing while I climb....

Use of the search function will tell you what people think of it. There have been many (too many) threads on this subject.

Five pages, minimum.

Yup!

There are also some wilderness areas where it is illegal to amplify music.   Just sayin....
