Hiding tick list from profile

There actually is an option on MP to classify the type of tick- i.e. Lead / Follow / TR; Onsight, Flash, Fell / Hung, etc.

The problem is this feature isn't very useful as presently implemented: The tick list doesn't clearly indicate this information, only on the route page; The tick breakdown page doesn't give you control of how ticks are displayed (for example I would only want my lead climbs shown on the charts); and until recently, you could only add these tick details on the MP webpage, not the app (and I'm not about to go back and update all my ticks).

Personally I only tick climbs that I've lead. I usually mark climbs that I've top roped or followed etc by giving them stars. It would be nice to keep track of these with ticks also, but I don't want to throw off my tick breakdown, which is kinda nice for seeing my progress over time. If I could select, via dropdown list or checkboxes, which ticks are included in my tick breakdown, I'd probably tick everything.

(edit: I realized the tick list does indicate which type of tick at the beginning of the comments field. It would be much clearer if this was a separate column.)

Yeah, someone asked a few weeks ago if there was a way to implement some kind of sort, to be able to see only the routes sent/redpointed/onsighted etc. or mark them by color, etc. The admin response was that it would be nice, but isn't realistically going to be implemented anytime soon.

I personally like to keep track of all the climbs I did, whether I sent them, or not. It's nice to go back to a route and see that I tried it for the first time 6 years ago, came back to it twice more, and then finally sent... or not, LOL

...

It's funny I hadn't even noticed that change in tick options. Shows how long it has been since I entered a tick. I thought people were just writing it, haha.

I think this brings up an interesting point. Does climbing hard mean you are a better or more knowledgeable climber and thus your opinion or perspective is more valid.

If: climber A regularly onsights 5.11 on every type of terrain, on gear, clipping bolts, in the alpine and climber B just redpointed Social Outcast 5.12a wearing rental shoes,an Ecrin rock helmet, and mesh shorts

Then: Climber B must have a better opinion because well a tick of 5.12a is far superior to 5.11a

No, obviously this isn't the case, but when someone is spewing obviously (to someone with experience) incorrect information about something that they obviously (to someone with experience) know nothing about, a noob who doesn't have the experience to know that the information being presented is incorrect can at least get some kind of an idea about how experienced the various posters are by looking at their profile and can make a more educated decision on who to listen to.

I envisioned the feature to hide it from your profile, if you're looking at a specific route you should probably still be able to see who has ticked it, though sometimes on my ticks I write specific gear beta which I'm not sure if anyone actually wants to see. Oh well....

Eli I want all your gear beta :)

I don't think anyone thinks like that. If both climber A and climber B logged all their ticks, I would be able to look at climber A and note that he has 1257 ticks going back 15 years, and that would count for a heck of a lot more than climber B, who joined the MP 3 weeks ago and having 1tick in his profile.

and lol, his mesh shorts shouldn't affect my opinion of his prowess or climbing knowledge... But oh god, they sure do.

This request comes up now & then and the site landlord has always been mum about it (I can see why); I wouldn't hold my breath if I was you.

Just create an anonymous account for your ticks like some have suggested unless your ticks are so impressive that people can guess who you are (e.g. Tank Evans).

If they implemented what you suggest, then those same people would be complaining about your hidden profile and saying “share your ticks or shut up.”  I’ve noticed that the ticklists and personal attacks come out when somebody is losing an argument.  Some people seem to have trouble with constructing logical arguments and don’t understand why an appeal to authority is a fallacy.  If it is getting to a point where you want to hide your ticks, maybe it’s time to step away from the forums for a bit.

I personaqlly tick a route every time I climb it...because the site tracks your statistics and lets you know how many pitches you climb etc
because the ticks are displayed publicly and my area is relatively small, it seems silly for me to have like 5 ticks listed on something

I think it would be nice to be able to set some or all of your personal ticks to private only

What about lying about ticks?  That throws most of this out of the window.

I second the notion that context and the arguments themselves are the best way to judge competence, though those can still be misconstrued.

Good point. Time to demand video evidence.

The guy belaying me at the fair said that if I touched the anchor, I climbed it.

Hey, if I don't hear the bell ring, it doesn't count!

Well... somebody stole all the bells!!

I love how noobs don't want people to know they're noobs.  I recently came across a mild cam argument between two climbers in the gear forum.  Looking at their tick lists revealed that one climber had logged well over a thousand pitches on MP alone, mostly trad, all over the place, whereas the other (30 year old) climber had hung repeatedly on a 5.5 _last week_.  Seems like salient information to consider.  If you don't want people to see your ticks, do it in a guidebook, keep a journal, or use rockclimbing.com.  If you don't want to be seen as a noob, climb more.

Fortunately for me, I don't judge solely by the person's page or ticklist.

Good thing. I kinda like reading what rgold, healyje, Jim titt, and some of the rest of you have to say, lol!

My tick list has most certainly been pissed on, and some insults thrown in just for fun. Personally, I think that says more about the people who do that, than it does about myself or my abilities to deliver a good catch.

I like seeing what, and where people have climbed. It's just a fun part of being a community, and I have friends here now.

For actual information, it's nice to see who else has climbed something I am interested in, and their stars, grade, ratings and maybe comments for that route.

But, do as you wish. If you don't want information to be public, don't make it public.

Best, OLH

I don't know about your project, but the 5.7 I dogged my way up the other day definitely didn't have bells on top. I was actually very disappointed that I didn't get to ring a bell.

I don't really use the tick feature, but sometimes I look to see who has sent a route I'm thinking of trying.  Would your send/tick also be hidden if you click on the route?  Or just from your personal page?

I've done that. It's really useful to see someone's comments with their tick if you know them. And it's fun to see your friends having fun. Or general outrage at a route.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
