David Barbour wrote: Just in case people don't know, you're allowed to say a product is made in the USA even if every individual part is sourced from Asia. You just have to assemble it here. So I'm curious if Black Diamond is actually making the entire thing in SLC. It is pretty hard to have things made in the USA. 75% of the total cost has to be in the USA in order to claim USA country of origin. BD sources and manufactures stoppers, cam components, carabiner rod stock, carabiner forging, ascender raw material, ascender machining, crampon raw material, and crampon forming in the USA. On top of that all of the product mentioned is all assembled in the USA. Even anodizing is carried out in the SLC valley. |

I cant believe Omega Pacific hasn't made it on this list yet. OPs factory in in Oregon and most of the workers are inmates. Sounds sketchy but its actually a pretty rad program. Inmates are given a job, they are paid the same as if they were hired from off the street, when they are released from prison they can choose to stay on with OP. I think its pretty cool, inmates are given something positive and constructive to do while incarcerated, having a job already established when they get out may help with keeping them from becoming repeat offenders. I wonder if omega has ever released statistics on the program. |

Yes, Made in the USA legally means "all or virtually all" materials and manufacturing is from the US. Many companies import some materials thus the "built in" or "assembled in" or "Made in the USA with foreign and domestic parts." I appreciate any companies sincere effort to keep their American employees employed, though even more if it's "made in the USA." |

Just to update this thread, I've recently created a best American made climbing gear article on my site AmericanGearGuide.com . Hopefully this is helpful for those searching for gear made in the USA. |

Metolius cams unless something has changed |

Mountain tools. Great site, much made by the site owners (for 30 years), excellent quality, etc. Made in California, and although you might argue that California is not really America, well, there it is. (Check out the web-o-let). |

A correction about Metolius on the website--Metolius makes all safety rated products--that's carabiners, nuts, cams, hexes, harnesses--in their factory in Bend, OR. I was there in April, this is straight from them. Their packs, bags, and holds however, are made overseas. |

Robin S, my understanding was that Metolius cams were made in the US but little else. I just emailed them, so hopefully we'll find out soon. That would be awesome if they brought more manufacturing to the US. |

Thank you, Matt! |

I received an email from Metolius including a spreadsheet showing the origin of all their products. Looks like you're mostly right Robin S! I don't understand why they don't make any mention of it on their site (except for the Patriot Harness). According to the spreadsheet: Metolius nuts, cams, hexes, harnesses and a few of their slings are built in the USA. It looks like their carabiners are made in Taiwan. I'm especially excited about their harnesses. I love my Misty Mountain harness but it's nice to know there's another big player in US made harnesses. All right, now out to enjoy the beautiful day. |

Why are American jobs more sacred then Chinese jobs? Are Americans somehow "better" then Chinese people? The same for Malasian, Spanish, Vietnamese, Indian, British, Slovakian, etc etc |
