Unannounced Victory Whip

Maybe he really did slip at the anchors and was trying to save face, ie "Yes I meant to trip at the curb in an exaggerated manner!"

Never, EVER deserved to be dropped, unnanounced victory whip or not:

I think Mark's response had a bit of hyperbole/sarcasm built in

Asking for, and receiving, are two different things.

Well okay... good sleight-of-hand on definitions. Call me an old fuddy-duddy but I don't even like joking about intentionally dropping a climber.

Since when does dogging to the top of a 5.9 jug haul with a couple of hangs in a gym constitute "victory"?

Victory whips are dumb. I was almost sacked in the head by a falling climber who did exactly that in our gym. He skipped the last two clips, climbed to the anchor, and jumped off with a holler. Ended up swinging right past me with his feet at my head level. Luckily I heard him coming down.

+1

Victory whips are dumb enough. In a gym they're moronic and downright idiotic below 5.12 or there abouts.

The bigger issue is victory whipping a 5.9

That the OP said took multiple takes to get up.... A+ for celebrations lacking proper cause

Meh, people need to have real and sober discussions with any new partner about attentiveness to proper belay technique at all times or tragedy can result.

Putting it to the test in a surprise fashion ain't exactly the way I would try and found out if my partner knew how to belay. The ground work should be laid long before you put your life in their hands with as little question as humanly possible remaining that when you are leading that you have either a safe belayer or are knowingly free-soloing the route.

Dunno how many times I have had the convo with XRockStar who finally got XhotNewbie out on a climbing date:

"How'd it go with XHotNewbie?"

"Great. She's so fine."

"How was the belaying...?"

"Oh, yea...basically free-soloing."

Interesting the comments on age. What does age have to do with whipping? I am waay beyond my teenage years, or being a "young" guy. I have victory whipped (not after taking on a 5.9 . . . ) many times in the gym and occasionally outdoors. Regarding whipping in the gym, if you can't trust your belayer to catch you in the gym, how are you going to have confidence with him or her outside, in the real world?

I agree with the sentiment, but let's be realistic. When a climber has one arm over the top of the gym wall, pulling up slack, a belayer is not generally EXPECTING a fall (which by no means says they should not be ready for one).

In my experience, my climber has either told me on the ground or shouted down from the anchor that they were going to victory whip, which seems like a courteous thing to do.

I'd like a heads up from my climber when taking an intentional fall, but I'll catch them either way.

I saw this behavior in my gym, ATC belayer was paying a bit of slack for clipping into anchor when climber jumped.  55ft free fall, slowed down the last 5 ft only damage was nasty rope burn for belayer - dumb luck.

The climber can fall at any time for any reason. Belayers who expect their climber to announce when they are falling are of the incorrect mindset. I typically see that type of thing with trad climbers who mostly climb easy moderates and almost never fall. In the world of sport and harder trad, falling off unexpectedly is common. While telling your belayer you intend to whip at the end is a good idea, I would never demand it myself and I would not be mad if the climber dident tell me.

I bet that dude whipping all over the 5.9 will be climbing 11s and 12s in a years time.

Maybe. He will definitely be making GoPro films though.

I'd only be mad if the climber pulled so much slack he decks (it'd have to be a ton from the anchors) and people blamed me.

I'd like to see more people whipping with go pros, most of the vids I see with those things are boring/shitty as hell

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
