I re-read your post and think you're right. My mistake. But plenty of people are telling us how they feel.

I'll play too.

What every climber should feel: fear (damn you Alex!), vigilant, joy.

It's those boulder gropers trying to sneak in as real climbers again.

Don't forget to chalk up after you "feel the rock".

well, i saw on ST today that John Strand passed away, which makes me feel bummed, bummed, bummed.  dude was a wealth of knowledge.

my theory.... when i saw the 3 words in the MP article, i wondered how various generations would answer the question.  when i see the word 'empowered' i a pretty much assume it is a millennial speaking, given that they pretty much use that word every other word.  also, the author uses encouraged and inspired, which are pretty common millennial-speak.  you know, nurturing sort of words.

i figured that folks in the gen-x age would use words more like challenged, motivated, success, satisfaction, focused, determined, lucky, etc.  someone above stated loneliness, which i thought was an excellent reply.  a really excellent reply.

i also figured that some of the older climbers who have been around a while, climbed a lot, and are starting to dial things back would use words like comraderie, friendship, happiness, peace, appreciation, etc.

climbing friend,

1) forearm refreshed at crux

2) the boldness

3) quite high from your blunt smoke

Initially didn't like the "what others should feel.." phrasing but someone later suggested the alternative - "..three things you've felt and found most important".

So, on that note.. 44, Climbing since 1990 - with breaks here/there.

While I highly value the friends I've gained through climbing, the three most valuable feelings I've had as a result of climbing would be:

  • Awareness of my own capacity to remain composed in spite of being scared completely shitless
  • Insight learned from contemplating my own fear
  • Satisfaction had from sharing my experience and knowledge with other climbers

Yeah, I also thought "empowered" is the most over-used word in recent years.

Did your theory bode out?

ha ha, not sure yet.  i will have to build a spreadsheet.  i was a bit surprised by the number of folks who were unhappy about the phrasing of the question, although i can totally see their point (this was an oversight on my part in the original post).

i also liked some of the more physical/literal responses like yosemite granite, southern sandstone, etc.  those were excellent responses as well.  one of my favorite things about climbing at new areas is learning to read the colors and textures of the rock.

normajean, do you have 3 words?
