Hey everyone!

I'm moving to Albuquerque in January. I'm in the process of looking for apartments and was wondering if anyone had any advice on good areas to live? I'm also happy to take advice on the local scene, where to climb etc.

Thanks!

Albuquerque is a great place to live as long as you find the right spot. As for apartments it really depends on your budget. Living by the University is super nice if you wanna have easy access to good food and things to do. Plus that area is closest to the climbing gym. The apartments in that area can be a little rough because they cater to students so they are cheap and attract more than students. The northeast heights has some great locations as well. There are also varions areas in the northeast heights to choose from. The apartment selection is much nicer and it's easier to find Apartments with young professionals or retired people. Both solid neighbors. There are also lots of great places to eat as well. Another area is the west side of Albuquerque which can make for a long commute if you have to work on the east side of town or downtown. There are some nice looking apartments that way.

As for the climbing scene it is pretty good. The rock gym is definitely the hub and spot to meet people. We have some pretty good under rated climbing around New Mexico. The big advantage is there is not a lot of people.

Thanks! Yeah, gyms aren't a big part of the climbing culture in my hometown, so that'll be different. My office is in N ABQ near I-25, which seems to be fairly centrally located as far as housing goes, but NE heights is probably closer than the University.

When I lived there I rented a house near the north university golf course, which was a really nice spot with a running trail around and close to Nob Hill for restaurants and whatnot (not sure if a house rental is an option, but generally rent is fairly cheap in ABQ). One thing to be wary of is security. The first house I rented had bars on all windows and a security door and was fantastic, second place did not and I got broken into (most people you talk to there will have some experience with a break-in). From what I could tell, theft rates were way higher than violent crimes so it's safer than it might feel at first. Anyway, try to find a place with good security measures in place. Also, to second mattb, ABQ is centrally located to some amazing areas so be sure to check out as much as you can while you're there...I miss the easy access now that I'm gone.

NE heights for Sandia/foothills access, Nob Hill/North Campus/Parkland for restaurants, etc., North Valley for rural ambiance in city. Stay away from West Side, most of South Valley, and the Warzone/international district. The climbing is great, with adventure trad in Sandias.

There are nice houses & apartment units all over Albuquerque to rent ... main thing is you have to have a car ... Uber coverage is good though ...

Definitely make sure you get some security features, bars on windows etc.. break ins are pretty frequent.

I could eat at the Frontier most days, Garcia's the rest.

Do eat a lot of sopaipillas.

My post is not very helpful to your original inquiry.

On the contrary, this has all been really helpful! Thanks so much everyone!

You can find affordable apartments on Tramway north of the freeway. That puts you about 5 minutes from boldering in the Sandia foothills and 20 from the gym.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
