NRG: Family trip ideas

I am headed to the NRG for a family vacation in a few months. For those of you in the area, I'm looking for some suggestions of activities that might be good to take them on. Obviously, there's climbing, rafting, zip lining, etc.

More curious about:

- less touristy things that are worth seeing/doing
- climbing related things that non-climbers can do (e.g. via ferrata)

Has anyone done the "bridge walk"? See this site:

bridgewalk.com/index.php

I'm curious if that portion of the bridge is accessible only to the guiding companies or if I could take people on it? Obviously they'd miss the informational aspect by going with me so the guided option might be better for that reason regardless.

Tons of rafting trips available at whatever seriousness you decide. If you had kids, I'm sure they would be stoked for the slides and swimming up at the adventure center. You could also rent a pontoon boat up near summersville lake which is gorgeous. NRG is the shit; I need to plan another trip.

Take a mine tour. Good on a hot day. Touristy, yes, but interesting if you haven't grown up round mines.

If you guys go rafting, I HIGHLY Recommend going with the only privately owned outfitters left in the NRG. We have gone thrice and had a blast every time! Plus, they are significantly cheaper than the corporately owned guys. They also will let you get in the water at times if it's hot and rapids permit; where the corporate guys won't let anyone out except at the designated stops.

Also, ask for Reed as a guide. He was great!

Second vote for the mine museum in Beckley. Really interesting and my kids even thought so. Tours are led by former miners. Lots of great hiking and mountain biking in the area too. Just swimming in the river is also fun on a hot day.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
