Thieves at Smith Rock

Sad to say I had my backpack with a good amount of gear in it stolen from just off the path under Monkey Face yesterday. I have never had much reservation leaving inconspicuous goods at the bottom of a route at Smith and have done it hundreds of times without issue. This is a kind reminder to the community to be aware and that this can happen. Pleas be careful.

On a less likely note if you see some genius trying to sell this gear together please let me know, it is what I know got taken:

Black Kelty day pack
5X Black Diamond C4 cams - 3,3,2,.75,.5
Blue grigri 2
5-10 BD slings of various colors
1 colored BD nut set
Metolius nut tool
Belay glasses
Smith rock guide book
black patagonia puffy jacket
2 petzl mini traxions
2L Camelpak
1 delicious PB&J

Coming from somebody who had 1,200 dollars of climbing gear stolen from them this last fall, I feel your pain and I hope you get your stuff back. Good luck.

Dear climbers, this same thing happened to me, however I saw them grab the gear. Getting back was easy once I pulled my glock out and threten to put them in the river. If we Unite and stand up to this ass holes with force they will stop stealing.

You carry when you're going climbing? Or was this an unusual, remote location?

Maybe we could come up with a cheap, GPS device to track stolen packs.

I had a similar problem, but I was 7 pitches up a wall! Fortunately I had my .300 Win Mag in the haul bag, so I was able to shoot the thieves in the knees and rap down. By the time I was on the ground they had almost managed to crawl back to the parking lot, which actually saved me the trouble of carrying my pack back to my car from the base of the climb. All in all, a great day at the crag!

It's super cool technology. From the way I understood the mechanism of action it was, like, batman, like that part when Bruce way turns everyones phone into a tracking device to find the joker. The tile, once activated as lost, will send out a signal and the cell phone towers will ping it, but so will other cell phones that it comes close to, better honing in on its exact location. I've looked at possibly getting them to drop down the seat post on my bikes, sewing pockets into my kids clothes for when we go to amusement parks. The only thing I've not quite figured out yet is battery life and or if they have to be charged, switched out and the frequency that has to happen.

On another note, I lost about $2K dollars of gear...immediately, the worst thing to ever happen. 6 months later, the best thing to ever happen. I made a claim on my home owner insurance. Paid $350 deductible and OH MAN WAS IT SWEET. The people I talked to clearly had no clue how to price climbing eq. I didn't try to take too much advantage, ya know I gotta sleep at night, but man when all was said and done, according to their rules, I did kinda feel like a bandit. I was able to work a deal with the local climbing shop and bought everything in one purchase, got a big discount. All the gear and the ropes that got stolen, where seriously on their last thread, all of it was seriously used and abused, all of it was purchased at different times, the rack was pieced together, it was a mess. Then everything was shiny, new, and had the same timeline. Life saver. Take a look and see what receipt you've got to back up the purchases and talk to your insurance company.

Insurance will often cover if you have a picture of the item. So just snap photos of your stuff

I bought one and put it on my wallet. The tile works great.. Until it doesn't about nine months later.

On the tile FAQ page they state a 1 year life, then you replace it with a new tile.

Seems like 1 year may be optimistic.

Looks like you can only track your item with Tile to 100 feet from your phone. Then, you rely on other Tile users to locate your missing item.

Still, a great idea for missing stuff around your home or car. Maybe not as good for stolen items taken out of the area.

the Tile works on Bluetooth. So 100 feet is pushing it.More like 40 ft.

Get renters insurance. I had $1500 stolen out of my car at Leavenworth and got it all back.

Did you have color markings on any of your gear? Did you post to other forums? Cascadeclimbers.com? Facebook local groups?

I think it is pretty common at Smith, a friends rack was stolen out of car during the day.
Did Redpoint ever see any of their stuff again?
