It's the hottest dance move right now, Matt! Just put your arms at your sides and shrug your shoulders up and down; when done right, you should look like one funky-ass penguin.

Nice article. The liquor idea isn't half bad. I've yet to break out a flask of fireball at the crag and not had someone ask for a sip. I guess technically it makes you loose heat, but that fire in your belly gives the psychological boost to take off the belay parka and rope up.

Thanks, glad you liked it! I agree, the benefits of indulging outweigh the heat loss, for me at least. ;-)

When using handwarmers, make sure to open them and allow them to activate in the air outside of your chalkbag before putting em in (5-10 minutes). The chalk will clog the pores and make them less effective if you don't do this. I like to double up on em too.

nice, good tips! abram, while i think your overview of the penguin (a few posts up, responding to a question) is generally correct, imo it's a highly refined technique that requires attention to specific details to produce optimal results. after many years of practice, i think i've got it down (if i do say so myself, but everybody's gotta be good at something).

anyway, last year i actually did a short blog post specifically on...the penguin! with crappy home video demonstrating technique and everything.

i'd embed the video if i knew how, but don't want to hijack your thread :). link here if it helps. kellycordes.wordpress.com/2…

the chicken dance is a superior cold weather warm up ...

as you are warming up the entire body, arent off balance, and its learned by kids all over america ...

not to mention you can sing the song as well

the specific "beak" action warms up the fingers, the "wing" action the shoulders, and the "clapping" action clears any sitcky snow off your gloves and sleeves

and it promotes close coordination with your partners

;)

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
