Where to ice climb?

Hey guys,

It looks like I may be heading to the US in late Feb, early March of next year with the family. I have been granted a couple of days leave from the wife when we hit Colorado and really want to try ice climbing, ive never done it before. So my questions are;
- will there be any climbable ice left at that time or should I just bring my harness and climb some rock?
- where can I hire gear? I'll be near grand junction but will have a car
- anyone know a good guide that can show me the ropes and not send me bankrupt?

Thanks, any advice is appreciated.

Do a search on the Ouray Ice Park.

There is great ice in both the ouray park as well as the surrounding San Juan Mountains. Contact San Juan mountain guides. The rest of Colorado also has great ice that might me easier for u to get to but I don't know anything about it. I don't think feb/march will be too late in the season but u should check with someone more knowledgeable.

It's an easy drive from gj to the ice park in Ouray. If you are competent in building top rope anchors, then simply renting equipment from Ouray mountain sports and top roping are the easiest and safest way to try ice climbing. If you're uncomfortable with any of those options, there are several guiding services in Ouray that can show you the ropes (pun intended).
