Just read this article\interview with JJ and loved it. Nice work. Very interesting indeed! Do you mind if I share this with Wisconsin climbers up on the Devil's Lake page?

That was great. People like J.J. who are finding areas and putting up large numbers of routes in those areas definitely deserve credit for their investment in time, resources and work. They set the tone for what people can strive for and attempt both in terms of difficulty and style at those areas and their contribution in that regard can end up being more lasting and important to our experience than any specific anchors or route cleaning – although that is the labor that gives their input authority. I appreciate that we have something so valuable as these climbing areas that are regulated more by such personal leadership, example and the traditions they foster than by codified rules and committees.

Interesting stuff and worth the read. Love the Devils Lake stuff as I climbed there when the original DLFA began. Must go to the Waterfall.

"I felt like he had just pointed out my life’s calling. Like a modern day shaman in a trance, he stared through me into the future..."

Straight beast on the rocks and with the pen! Damn!

And Eric, you would LOVE the waterfall!!!

Years back Climbing used to do an interview deal called "Players". I always found that to be the most interesting reading, and enjoyed the different perspectives our sport affords us. There was always some hidden nugget of knowledge.... Or was it just the truth of experience?

Thanks Joel for putting together your Grass Roots Climbing project. I have always loved the history of climbing, and now more than ever we can easily record the stories of old, as well as, keep track of the new stuff. While I can sit a stare at cliffs from dawn to dusk and be perfectly content, climbing is much more than just routes, and crags, and how hard you climb. It's more than our next project, and for many of us that's what keeps us in the game.

This was a great way for me to look back as well and "take stock" you might say of a lot of tremendous memories that were beginning to fade away. I'm now closer to 40 than 30, and I am beginning to feel the burn. But I'm learning to rest deeply, and to listen to my body. I now know when enough is enough, though I'm looking forward to the next 12 years of climbing before I hit 50. I like the sounds of that, cause I know a lot of 50 year olds who are still cranking hard after all those years!

Looking forward to more interviews and stories of our beloved Northern Arizona, and the folks that make it so rad!
