New climbs both trad and sport are getting so short one has to do lie down starts to gain some exposure.

Just read an article about routes that start underwater. Sickkkk

My friends and I have been doing subterranean starts. Just dig a shallow trench, lie in it and have your buddy cover you with dirt. When your arm shoots out of the ground to latch the first hold, the unaware always scream. Video not working for some reason.

I am over six feet tall and my friends won't even let me climb with them any more since I top out on some routes with a jump start.

Paul, you rabble rouser! I'm going to do a lay down start to my next El Cap route. I'll lay down at the base and then stand up to place the first piece!

this is why I'll never be a boulderer. I am NOT ever going to be so desperate for a 'route' to lie down to start climbing. I am an upright homo sapiens and will not return to my knuckle dragging ancestors way of life just for fun.

If your planning on bouldering anything in Vedauwoo, bring a shovel!
one problem I sat down, threw for the lip and still had my ass on the ground. im not sure if thats a send or a complete failure! i'm going with send

This had a low start...but the bastard sure was burly.

I named it Goin' Big (aka Scrotal Elephantitis).

The skyline is tilted, so the boulder is actually a bit steeper than it looks...

But my bouldering of long ago, was just stretching out on a rock nearby befre a REAL rock climb, with no goal, no V14, no 'sport' of it's own, just the true purpose of loosening up as climbers have done. But I agree, it's time to change that pic to something much more impressive than pebble pumping.

Edit 5 min. later: I think there have been a couple posts rippin' me for that pic as profile pic. NOW I've replaced it with a real climbing pic..one of my favorite routes at the Red: Rock Wars! is now my profile pic. Enjoy, mock me now.

Yup,,,either a warm up for a climb, or an off day way to kill time between beers, trying not to strain ourselves if possible.

I personally see nothing wrong with bouldering here or there, whatever makes you happy, your anti bouldering rant combined with the bouldering profile pic was just too good to pass up!
but i like the new fo toe! sweet guns brah!
cheers!

Not really 'anti' bouldering, it's just I have no interest in stumbling and falling all day long back to the ground, for fun, (that's why we rope up, to go up, successfully, and not hit the ground, right?),, and see it as kinda pointless.

Danny Parker · · SLC, UT · Joined Dec 2011 · Points: 120

Not hitting the ground is success! rope or no rope, but if a rope is what keeps me from hitting the ground, i owe it to myself to start back on the ground.
