I am looking to take a climbing trip with a friend and am open to any location in the United States, although the closer to Texas the better. I'm comfortable leading 5.8 sport and 5.7 trad, but am also looking for a great destination for toprope climbing. What destinations offer fantastic and relatively easy (5.9 or easier) toprope climbing, perhaps with some slightly easier sport or trad routes? Looking forward to your suggestions!

Well if you go north central midwest, you can't beat Devils Lake for nice leads and tons of toprope routes. Quick easy set ups, short approach, nice cool clean lake to swim in, camping nearby. Quite a bit north of Texas, but certainly one of the premier non sport, toprope mainstays of the US.

michaeltarne wrote:+1 for Sam's! The MP page for Sam's doesn't list toprope as a possibility for almost all of the climbs. I know that's something easily overlooked. So... are most of the climbs at Sam's toprope-able?

There's relatively easy top access to almost any route out there, and a good number of them have anchors.

I'm probably pointing out the obvious, but Enchanted Rock is your closest option. Although, it will be excessively hot right now.

A gym? Edit: In the spirit of not violating rule #1 - If you can lead 5.7 trad, why not find an area where the weather will be decent with a good amount of moderates, and head there? Aim to get in more mileage, or push your lead grade. Just food for thought.

Make that a +2 for Devil's Lake. I'm up there almost every weekend. You can set up a top rope on almost any of the some 2,000+ routes there. Camping nearby, great views, fun towns nearby. You can't go wrong.
