BCC Break In
|

Make sure not to take anything of value with you to BCC was climbing at Challenge Buttress today 8-30-11 we were parked right across the street and my friends car got broken into the windows were not broken or anything some how they popped the locks and got away with some valuable stuff just throwing the warning out there still shocked they were able to break in the car without being stopped... |

Unfortunately, this kind of shit happens at all of our climbing areas. I had a window smashed out and got robbed at Parley's in broad daylight while the parking lot was almost full. Pretty lame. |

Thats pretty lame I know it happens all the time I just haven't seen it posted in awhile just thought I give the heads up |

I also had my car broken into in LCC last year. They smashed the back window. Really sucky thing is the door was unlocked... |

We too had a car broken into on 8\30. We were parked lower down in the lot for the Outside Corner. We saw it in progress, and their vehicle , which was of importance later. You should know that people were caught, I'll explain. My friend had her smart phone taken, I urged her to call her I.T. guy at work who manages the account. Ultamately he was able to run a trace on it. He not only was able to nail it's current location ,but also sent us a google earth pic of the building it was in. After some run around about jurisdiction of crime v.s. current location of stolen goods, we were able to have two SLCPD cruisers meet us. They confronted the people, after we confirmed the vehicle we saw at the scene. She got her cell phone back, but not a few other things. Point of story? Make sure you file a police report w\ the unified police authority, they have jurisdiction over the canyon. They also know about our interactions w\slcpd and are apparently in communication w\them about the case and any other materials recovered from the vehicle. The vehicle was going to be impounded last we heard. Thats the quick and dirty version of what was a five hour affair for us yesterday. I'd like to give a huge thanks to the SLCPD, who were a huge help, as well as the Unified PD for their follow up. These guys are often under appreciated, but really were great. |

Brian in SLC wrote:Fantastic! Any info on the "look" of these folk? What's my watchout? Good on ya! No real discernable look. The culprits were in a moderately nice rental car, and looked like any other slightly shady and or unkept caucasion fellows. Of course, from the third pitch of Outside Corner they just looked like people leaning on the car while taking photos. I wish I could tell you more. For me, the take home lesson was to lock anything of worth in my rocket box in the future. Leaving it out of site and mind, as well as significantly less convieniant for the smash and grab crowd. |

Perhaps the UniPoli should be convinced to do a few sting operations: |

Another instance today. A group of friends and myself were climbing at Parleys canyon, my friends car and the car next to ours were broken into. Something to be aware of. Whoever did it was moving quick and knew just what they were doing. This seems to happen disturbingly often, Best to leave your car empty while climbing anywhere in the wasatch front and you may consider leaving your windows open. Sure wish we could get that sting going... anybody have connections that could get the ball rolling in that direction? |

Sad how true this is - I've started leaving my doors unlocked and my windows open. I never leave anything of value in my car, and I dont want some scumbag smashing my windows open just to find that out. |

A few weeks ago while on outside corner i had my car broken into as well, luckily no windows were broken. They went through the whole car and moved everything around including expensive climbing gear. These hoodlums apparently only want wallets and electronics? keep them hidden!!! nice work on getting some of them busted! |

I wonder if these fuckers read these threads...?? Obviously not all, but maybe some? Why don't we use a climbing community liaison to accept donations sufficient to pay for a rental car that Unified PD could use as a bait car? I mean, if the police like busting douchebags, this is a simple op they could execute and raise their busted/not-busted ratio with some basic covert surveillance. I mean, it'd take some effort to sit in the woods, watch, etc., but what incentive do the police have to bump up the priority on this activity in the canyon? We have to give them/identify the incentive for them. From the law enforcement perspective, they don't have enough manpower/funding to make it a priority. Do any of the canyon coalitions/residents/resorts (people with influence) have a more than apathetic or barely sympathetic opinion on the matter? |
